In 1978, after 12 years with Belmont, Perelman sought more influence but his father had no plans to step down. This led to Perelman’s resignation and move to New York.
In 1978, he independently acquired Cohen-Hatfield Jewelers, selling off retail locations for a $15 million profit. Perelman also acquired MacAndrews & Forbes, facing resistance but succeeding. He gradually acquired full ownership. Over time, he made strategic acquisitions, including Technicolor Inc. and Consolidated Cigar Holdings Ltd. In 1986, he took control of Compact Video Inc.
