In 1961, during his first year at the Wharton School, Ronald Perelman and his father purchased Esslinger Brewery for $800,000, later selling it for a $1 million profit. At Belmont Iron Works, they acquired companies, trimmed excess divisions, and refocused on core business. In 1978, after 12 years with Belmont, Perelman sought more influence but his father had no plans to step down. This led to Perelman’s resignation and move to New York.
In 1978, he independently acquired Cohen-Hatfield Jewelers, selling off retail locations for a $15 million profit. Perelman also acquired MacAndrews & Forbes, facing resistance but succeeding. He gradually acquired full ownership. Over time, he made strategic acquisitions, including Technicolor Inc. and Consolidated Cigar Holdings Ltd. In 1986, he took control of Compact Video Inc.
Perelman’s company, MacAndrews & Forbes, diversified its holdings, including Marvel Comics (later sold in 1997), Revlon, and SIGA Technologies.
