Richard Liu was born on March 10, 1973, in Suqian, Jiangsu, China, he attended primary school in Jiangsu before pursuing sociology at Renmin University of China in 1992. His parents were involved in coal shipping between North and South China.
Liu dedicated his free time to learning computer programming. In 1996, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and later earned an executive MBA from China Europe International Business School in Shanghai.
Career
Richard Liu established his own business, Jingdong, in Beijing. It focused on selling genuine products in a market flooded with counterfeits, in 2003, 12 Jingdong stores were established.
The SARS outbreak in 2003 prompted Liu to shift to online business after losing over 8 million yuan. In 2004, he launched his first online retail site, later founding JD.com. In 2005, all physical stores transitioned into e-commerce.
Despite a tempting offer of 18 million yuan in 2005, Liu declined to sell JD.com. In 2007, he adopted a full-category strategy, broadening the company’s offerings. JD.com, often likened to Amazon, thrived under Liu’s guidance.
