Biography
Jewish parents Jane and Martin gave birth to Richard Blumenthal in New York City on February 13, 1946. His mother was from Nebraska, while his father was an immigrant from Germany. David, one of his brothers, went on to study medicine and serve as the head of the Commonwealth Fund. Blumenthal attended Riverdale Country School in the Bronx as a child. He continued on to Harvard College, where he received a magna cum laude in 1967.
He was given a Fiske Fellowship while working as a reporter intern for the Washington Post’s London Bureau during one of his summers. This enabled him to continue his education for a year after graduating from Harvard at both Trinity College and the University of Cambridge. Blumenthal then enrolled at Yale Law School, where he earned his JD in 1973.
Career
Blumenthal was granted five draft exemptions during the Vietnam War because of his training and line of work. In the end, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserve, serving in units in Connecticut and Washington, DC, until 1976, rising to the rank of sergeant.
Blumenthal started his career as an administrative and clerical assistant for various personalities in Washington, DC after graduating from law school and passing the bar. He worked with people including Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun, Judge Jon O. Newman, and Senator Abraham A. Ribicoff. then, Blumenthal joined Cummings & Lockwood as a partner and then joined Silver, Golub & Sandak as a partner.
He was the US Attorney for the District of Connecticut from 1977 until 1981. Blumenthal founded and became the helm of the private organization Citizens Crime Commission of Connecticut after leaving that job. In addition, he served as a volunteer attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund from 1981 to 1986 and as a representative for Connecticut from 1985 to 1987.
