Controversial street-hop singer, Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has dodged a three-month jail sentence after paying a ₦30,000 fine imposed by a Magistrate Court in Ifo, Ogun State.

The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo, had on Tuesday convicted the singer on two counts of assault stemming from a 2022 incident. He was found guilty of conspiracy to assault and unlawful assault but escaped incarceration by settling the monetary option attached to the judgment.

According to the prosecution led by Inspector Olumide Awoleke, the case involved an attack on one Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi on November 18, 2022, in the Okeosa, Ilogbo axis. Portable and a group of others, still at large, were accused of physically assaulting the victim and allegedly making away with studio equipment, including a Yamaha H55 monitor, an AKG P420 condenser microphone, and various interface cables.

While the charge of theft was dropped, the court held him liable for the assault-related charges. He was handed one month in prison with a ₦10,000 fine for conspiracy, and two months with a ₦20,000 fine for the unlawful assault, totaling three months or ₦30,000.

Portable, who was first arraigned in April 2023 under charge number MIF/192C/2023, had earlier secured bail to the tune of ₦300,000 with two sureties. However, his repeated failure to appear in court prompted his remand last week.

He returned to court on Tuesday and opted to pay the fine, thereby avoiding the jail term.
