Police arrest 150 over unrest after killing of teenage boy by police officers

French President Emmanuel Macron called for an urgent meeting with senior ministers on Thursday following widespread riots that erupted across France overnight. The unrest was sparked by the fatal police shooting of a teenager of North African descent during a traffic stop. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin reported 150 arrests nationwide as public anger spilled onto the streets, particularly in the ethnically diverse suburbs of major cities.

Meanwhile, the town of Nanterre, located on the western outskirts of Paris where the shooting occurred, served as the epicenter of the disturbances. Macron condemned the acts of violence targeting police stations, schools, and town halls, emphasizing their unjustifiability.

Additionally, the incident on Wednesday has amplified long-standing grievances regarding police violence within the economically disadvantaged and racially diverse suburbs surrounding French cities. A video circulating on social media captured the moment when two police officers confronted the teenager in a Mercedes AMG, with one officer firing at close range as the young driver attempted to flee. The teenager succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter, as confirmed by the local prosecutor.
