Nigeria has 371 tribes with different languages, although the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba tribes are the most popular in the country mostly because they contribute a high percentage to the country’s population. Marriage is a lovely institution that should be well thought out. Every tribe in Nigeria is distinct and has qualities that may draw people from one tribe or away from another when it comes to marriage.

10. Itsekiri

The Itsekiri tribe are one of the Yoruboid subgroup of Nigeria’s Niger Delta area, They speak a Yoruboid language and can be found in Delta State. The Itsekiris presently number 2.7 million people and live mainly in the Warri districts of Delta State on the Atlantic coast of Nigeria. Significant communities of Itsekiris can be found in parts of Edo and Ondo states and in various other Nigerian cities including Lagos, Benin City, Port Harcourt and Abuja.  The Itsekiris are closely related to the Yoruba of South Western Nigeria and also close to the Okpe people and Edo people. Good men with a good conscience make a faithful husbands, and so are men from the Itsekiri tribe.

9. Eket

Eket, apart from being a local government area in Akwa Ibom State is one of the three geopolitical zones in the state. The geopolitical zones are the Uyo senatorial district, Ikot Ekpene senatorial district and Eket senatorial district.

The name Eket or Ekid also refers to the indigenous ethnic group of the region and to their language. The Eket people use the endonym Ekid for themselves and their language, but Europeans spell and pronounce the name as “Eket”.

8. Esan

The Esans are the ethnic group that occupies central Edo State, they primarily speak the Esan language, an Edoid language related to Edo, Urhobo, Owan language, Isoko, Anioma and Etsako. It is considered a regionally important language in Nigeria, and it is taught in primary schools in addition to being broadcast on radio and television.

The Igala people are an ethnicity located in the region south of the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers. Igala people and their culture have been an integral part of the formation of the communities along the Niger River, with many communities claiming origins from Idah, the ancestral home of the Igala. Minorities of the group exist in the surrounding states of Delta, Edo along the banks of the Niger as well as in the bordering communities in Anambra and Enugu.

The Ibibio people are a coastal people in southern Nigeria. They are mostly found in Akwa Ibom, Cross River State and the Eastern part of Abia State.
