A missing Indonesian submarine that lost contact on Wednesday off the coast of Bali has been found with hopes of rescuing 53 sailors on board faded.

The search team on Sunday focused on pinpointing the sub’s exact location. Authorities warned any salvage operation would be risky and difficult in the deep waters.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian military head Hadi Tjahjanto said while speaking with newsmen that “all 53 personnel onboard have passed”.

“The objects found near the last location of the submarine are believed to be parts of the submarine,” he said.

“These objects would have never got out of the submarine unless there was pressure.”

Authorities said it was unlikely that there was an explosion on board the submarine.

“In that event [an explosion], they would have heard it by now at this stage,” she said, adding that authorities were still exploring the possibilities for medical evacuations.
