Biography
Michael Essien on the 3rd of December 1982 in Accra Ghana to Aba Gyandoh and James Essien. He attended Gomoa Nyanyano DC Primary and Secondary School. Essien began his football career after graduating from St. Augustine’s College, playing at a local club called Liberty Professionals.
He also played in the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship in New Zealand and had a trial at Manchester United in April 2000. He was however unable to sign for the club, as he was ineligible to obtain a work permit in the United Kingdom.
In 2000, he moved to France to join Bastia, where he spent three seasons and appear in over 60 matches, and scored 12 goals. He joined Lyon in 2003 and won back-to-back league titles in 2003–04 and 2004–05. He also won Ligue 1 Player of the Year in 2005 and was nominated for the 2005 FIFA World Player of the Year Award.
In 2005, Essien signed with Chelsea for a £24.4 million transfer fee and, at the time of his signing, was the most expensive African footballer in history. He helped the club win the Premier League in 2006 and 2010, as well as three FA Cups and one League Cup. He also won the UEFA Champions League in 2011–12, while also placing as runner-up in the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League.
In 2012, Essien left Chelsea and went on a season-long loan to with Real Madrid. He has since then had short stints with several clubs including AC Milan, Panathinaikos, Persib Bandung, and Sabail.
