Biography
On May 9, 1955, in Adwa, Tigray Province in the Ethiopian Empire, Meles Zenawi was born Legesse Zenawi Asres. Alemash Ghebreluel, an Eritrean, and Zenawi Asres, a native of Adwa, were his parents. Third out of six kids, he was. Queen of Sheba Junior High School and General Wingate High School were Zenawi’s places of education throughout his formative years.
He attended Haile Selassie I University after graduating from the latter in 1972. In order to memorialize Meles Takele, a classmate of Zenawi’s who had been killed by the Derg regime in 1975, he changed his first name to Meles.
