Biography
As the third child of Cuban immigrants Oriales and Mario, who arrived in the country in 1956 before the Cuban Revolution, Marco Rubio was born on May 28, 1971, in Miami, Florida. He has a younger sister named Veronica, a younger sister named Barbara, an elder brother named Mario Jr., and an older sister named Barbara. Rubio spent a portion of his formative years in Las Vegas, Nevada, where his mother worked as a maid and his father as a bartender. He returned to Miami and attended South Miami Senior High School, eventually earning his diploma in 1989.
Before going to Santa Fe Community College in Florida, Rubio spent a year studying at Tarkio College in Missouri. Later, he enrolled in the University of Florida, where in 1993 he earned a BA in political science. Rubio then enrolled in the University of Miami School of Law, where he graduated in 1996 with a JD.
Career
Rubio worked as an intern for US Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen while he was still in law school. He was chosen to serve as a municipal commissioner for West Miami two years after completing law school.
Teaching Career
After leaving the Florida Legislature in 2008, Rubio began working as an adjunct professor on a fellowship appointment at Florida International University. After joining the US Senate in 2011, he went back to school. Rubio led classes on Florida legislative politics at the Department of Politics and International Relations.
House of Representatives of Florida
Rubio entered the Florida House of Representatives’ 111th House District special election in late 1999. He finished second in the Republican primary, but he triumphed in the ensuing runoff election, defeating Democrat Anastasia Garcia to take the seat. In late 2000 and again in 2002, Rubio won reelection without a challenger. He later won elections for a third and fourth time, beginning in 2004 and 2006, respectively. Rubio served as House Speaker in the closing years of his term, from late 2006 to late 2008.
US Senate
Rubio declared his intention to compete for Mel Martnez’s open seat in the US Senate in 2009. He trailed Charlie Crist, the current governor of Florida, at first, but eventually caught up with him and won the Republican nomination. In the end, Rubio defeated Democratic candidate Kendrick Meek to win the general election. He suspended his unsuccessful presidential bid in early 2016 and then ran for reelection to the Senate, where he was successful in winning a second term. Rubio defeated Democrat Val Demings in 2022 to win reelection for a third term.
He was a strong supporter of the US embargo on Cuba and the US participation in the military campaign to topple Muammar Gaddafi in Libya early in his Senate career. He also dissented from the 2011 Budget Control Act. Later, in 2013, Rubio participated in a cross-party coalition that pushed for comprehensive immigration reform legislation. He also voted against the publication of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on CIA torture as well as the extension of background checks for firearms purchases.
