Frank McCourt was born on August 19, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York City to Irish parents. Malachy Gerald McCourt, Sr., and Angela Sheehan struggled to make ends meet during the Great Depression. In 1934, the family moved back to Limerick, Ireland, in search of a better life. However, the situation there was dire.

Frank took on the task of providing for his family in the absence of his father, resorting to acts of survival. His formal education stopped when he was 13, and he worked numerous jobs, devoting most of his money to supporting his mother and siblings.
