In principle, most of us understand the need of being prepared for anything. But the truth is that we can often feel hopelessly unprepared to manage all of life’s curve balls. Let’s face it: being an adult can be difficult at times! We don’t learn everything we need to know in school. Many people have excellent degrees and can handle mathematics, but they have no idea where to start when it comes to public speaking or making a delicious meal. Here are ten basic life skills you should learn, along with instructions on how to learn them for free:

Writing Skills

You don’t need to learn how to become the next best-selling novelist, but you do need to know how to communicate effectively through writing. A well-written letter or email can help you save money on bills, obtain a job, resolve a family or friend problem, or improve your performance at work.

Public Speaking Skills

Speaking, like writing, can make some of us cringe in the corner while others take to it like fish in water. Everyone can learn some useful strategies for speaking more effectively, such as remembering to breathe, being prepared, and connecting with and expressing your objective to your audience. Take the plunge and sign up for a speaking opportunity, a church talk, or the open forum at your PTO meeting if you’re bold and once you can. You’ll get better at it if you practice a lot.

Foreign Language Skills

We’re rapidly approaching a multilingual period, in which everything from culture to business to people is becoming increasingly globalized. This practical knowledge of learning a foreign language is a game-changer, whether you want to advance your job, create a stronger bond with your family and friends, or plan to travel in the near future.

Meditating Skills

Meditation has been scientifically proven to promote happiness, reduce stress, and increase productivity, allowing you to do more during the day. Meditation is becoming more popular in our culture–for the better–after years of being an uncommon practice.

Communication Skills

Communication skills are essential life skills that involve both writing and speaking, whether we’re talking about writing or speaking. No one gets through life alone, so learning to communicate with others can aid you in getting where you need to go in life—and it’s a talent that can be mastered. It’s about being able to convey your needs and desires while also being able to comprehend and relate to the needs and desires of others. We create relationships and friendships through communication, therefore being good at it implies you’ll be successful in your dealings with people.

Budgeting Skills

Many of us have had to acquire financial lessons through costly trial and error rather than studying basic personal finance skills in school. You can avoid and pay off debt, save for retirement, and eventually buy a home or go on a dream vacation if you learn to keep to a budget.

Sewing Skills

Simply learning the fundamentals of sewing can save you a lot of money because you’ll be able to patch tiny tears, reattach buttons, and even hem pants that are too long rather than always buying new apparel. You’ll also be able to adapt your clothing or your children’s clothing as their weight or development spurts change.

Logical Thinking + Problem Solving Skills

If you took a logic class in college or you’ve experienced a “If this, then that” question on a test, then you’re familiar with logic. Unfortunately, it isn’t a skill that everyone possesses. Yes, this life skill is about prioritizing, but it’s also about being able to break down a situation and make decisions. It’s all about weighing the pros and cons of various scenarios and honing your critical thinking abilities to deal with life’s hiccups.

First-Aid Skills

Do you know how to handle a deep cut or a fractured bone? Are you familiar with the symptoms of a heart attack, stroke, or concussion? As mothers, we are regularly called upon to fulfill a variety of roles, but bringing out the doctor’s bag may be the most important. One of the basic life skills you need is the first-aid skill. If your first-aid abilities are rusty, invest in a basic first-aid book. It’s natural to feel panicked in an emergency, but if you’re familiar with first aid, you’ll be able to trust your instincts and knowledge, and you’ll arrive at the scene calmer.

Cooking Skills

There are numerous aspects to cooking, but everyone should feel confident enough in the kitchen to prepare a delicious dinner with things they already have. You won’t be tempted to order takeout as often if you can turn essentials into meals from your cupboard and refrigerator. Cooking is one of the very important life skills.
