Josh Smith was born on December 5, 1985, in College Park, Georgia, USA, is one of Pete and Paulette Smith’s five children. His father played professional basketball in the 1970s in the American Basketball Association (ABA). His mother ran for the 2022 Republican primary in Georgia’s 6th congressional district.
Smith went to John McEachern High in Powder Springs, Georgia. In the summer before his senior year, he played with future NBA players Randolph Morris and Dwight Howard on the Atlanta Celtics AAU team. For his senior year, Smith moved to Oak Hill Academy, where he was on the same team as Rajon Rondo. He had impressive stats, averaging 22 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 6 blocks, and 3 steals per game, contributing to Oak Hill’s perfect 38-0 record. Career
Josh Smith played for the Atlanta Hawks from 2004 to 2013. He was drafted by the Hawks in 2004 and won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in his rookie year. He had a good season in 2004-05 and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. In 2007, he became the youngest player to block 500 shots in NBA history. He had a high-scoring game in 2007 with 38 points against the Milwaukee Bucks.
In 2008, Smith had a great playoff game with 28 points and 7 blocks against the Boston Celtics, even though the Hawks were the 8th seed. He signed with the Memphis Grizzlies but returned to the Hawks. In 2010, he reached 1,000 career blocked shots and was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team.
