Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on November 20, 1942. Growing up in a Catholic home with three siblings, Joe’s family experienced financial difficulties. His father struggled to find employment in the 1950s while Scranton’s economy was in decline. Joe’s father eventually had to relocate the family to Delaware, where he worked as a used car dealer.
Joe Biden joined the football team in high school and won the position of class president. While studying in both history and political science at the University of Delaware, he also played collegiate football. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1965.
After that, Joe went on to the Syracuse University College of Law, where he graduated in 1968 with a law degree. He was famously charged with plagiarism during this period. Biden was able to postpone the draft when he was a student during the Vietnam War. Despite being an athlete his whole life, Joe was granted a medical deferral for asthma when he graduated and became qualified once more.

After graduating from college, Biden worked as a legal assistant before becoming a public defender and opening his own practice. He entered politics for the first time in 1969 when he ran for a position on the New Castle County Council. After winning the election, he quickly turned his attention to the US Senate.
He won the 1972 US Senate election in Delaware despite being the clear underdog. At age thirty, he was one of the youngest senators in US history. After a long stint in the US Senate, Joe set his sights on the ultimate prize: the Presidency. In 1987, he ran for the Democratic nomination, although he ran into trouble when he was accused of plagiarizing a speech. Further controversy eventually led to Biden withdrawing from the race.
Biden made another bid for the Democratic candidacy in 2008. Despite the fact that Biden’s campaign had many positive aspects, his remarks on Barack Obama and Indians turned out to be grave mistakes. He struggled to raise money and was never a credible opponent for either Obama or Hillary Clinton. But in the end, he was appointed vice president by Barack Obama. He resigned from the Senate in 2008 to work in Obama’s administration. Joe Biden was chosen by the Democrats to be their presidential candidate in 2020.
