Biography

Jamie Foxx was born Eric Marlon Bishop on December 13, 1967. He is the son of Darrell Bishop (renamed Shahid Abdula following his conversion to Islam), Shortly after his birth, Foxx was adopted and raised by his mother’s adoptive parents, Esther Marie (Nelson), a domestic worker and nursery operator, and Mark Talley, a yard worker. Foxx has had little contact with his birth parents, who were not part of his upbringing. He was raised in the black quarter of Terrell, which at the time was a racially segregated community. He has often acknowledged his grandmother’s influence as one of the greatest reasons for his success.

Foxx began playing the piano when he was five years old. He had a strict Baptist upbringing and as a teenager was a part-time pianist and choir leader in Terrell’s New Hope Baptist Church. His natural talent for telling jokes was already in evidence as a third grader, when his teacher used him as a reward: if the class behaved well, Foxx would tell them jokes. He attended Terrell High School, where he received top grades and played basketball and football (as quarterback). His ambition was to play for the Dallas Cowboys, and he was the first player in the school’s history to pass for more than 1,000 yards. He also sang in a band called Leather and Lace. After high school, Foxx received a scholarship to United States International University, where he studied musical and performing arts composition.

Acting Career

Foxx’s first film appearance was in the 1992 comedy Toys. Other films that Foxx appeared in during this time included The Great White Hype and Any Given Sunday, which earned Foxx his first award nominations for his film work.

He was further nominated for his roles in Ali (2001, in which he starred opposite Will Smith),  Breakin’ All the Rules, and Collateral, which grossed $217.7 million worldwide. For his work on Collateral alongside Tom Cruise, Foxx was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In 2004, Foxx portrayed Ray Charles in the biopic Ray. For his performance in the titular role, Foxx won nineteen awards, including the Academy Award for Best Actor and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor. In 2005, he joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Other notable films Jamie has worked on include Stealth, Jarhead, Miami Vice, the award-winning film adaptation of the stage show Dreamgirls, the biopic The Soloist, Law Abiding Citizen, Valentine’s Day, I’m Still Here, Due Date, Horrible Bosses, Django Unchained, White House Down, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Horrible Bosses 2, Annie, Sleepless, and Baby Driver. An award-winning recording artist, Foxx has released five studio albums. His first album, 1994’s “Peep This”, was a commercial flop. However, his second album “Unpredictable” (2005) was his most successful with a double-platinum certification from the RIAA. The album also reached #1 on both the Billboard 200 and U.S. R&B charts, and #9 on the UK albums chart. To date, the album has sold 1.98 million copies in the U.S. His hit singles include “Unpredictable” (featuring Ludacris), “Blame It” (featuring T-Pain), and “Fall for Your Type” (featuring Drake). On April 12, 2023, Jamie Foxx’s daughter, Corinne, announced that he had been hospitalized after an unspecified medical emergency, but that he was recovering. On May 12, amid conflicting reports about the nature of Foxx’s condition, including rumours that he was gravely ill, Corinne Foxx said that her father had been “out of the hospital for weeks, recuperating”. Since late April, Foxx has reportedly been treated in a “physical rehab facility in Chicago” that specializes in “strokes and brain injuries”. On July 22, 2023, Foxx posted a video clip commenting about his health on his Instagram account, saying that he had been to “hell and back”.
