Gordon Moore was born in San Francisco, California on January 3, 1929, he showed an early interest in science and technology. This devotion persisted throughout his education.

Moore attended Sequoia High School from 1942 to 1946, actively participating in sports. He studied chemistry at San José State College from 1946 to 1947, transferring to the University of California, Berkeley in 1948.

He graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. In September 1950, Moore began studies at the California Institute of Technology. He later earned his Ph.D. in chemistry in 1954.

From 1953 to 1956, Moore conducted postdoctoral research at the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University.

Career

In 1965, Gordon Moore predicted that computer chips would get twice as powerful every two years. This greatly boosted technology. After retiring in 1997, he and his wife, Betty, started giving to help nature, science, and patients through the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Moore also supported science projects like the Thirty Meter Telescope and the Allen Institute for Brain Science.

By the time Moore passed away, his foundation had given over $5 billion, with about $9 billion more to give. They generously donated $600 million to the California Institute of Technology in 2001 and another $100 million in 2015.
