Biography
On April 30, 1958, in Derry, Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom, James Lifford Hewitt was born. He was raised in Devon and Kent and is the son of Shirley Stamp and Captain John Alfred Hewitt. John competed in the 1952 Olympics as a pentathlete and served in the Royal Navy before joining the Royal Marines as an officer. James, who has an elder sister named Alexandra, went to Millfield in Somerset and Norwood Preparatory School in Exeter.
Career
Hewitt was commissioned into the British Army in April 1978 as a second lieutenant in the Life Guards after graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He received a promotion to lieutenant two years later, and in October 1981, he was given a special regular commission. James received another promotion in October 1984, this time to acting captain. A year later, he was given a regular commission. He participated in the Gulf War in 1991 as the commander of a Challenger tank squadron, and in June of that year, he was acknowledged in dispatches (official reports drafted by senior officers) “in recognition of service during the operation in the Gulf.” Hewitt took the test to advance to major status, but he failed it three times. After serving in the British Army for 17 years, Hewitt resigned in March 1994. The BBC stated that Hewitt was awarded the rank of major upon his retirement, which was “in line with common army practice.”
James first created a driving range for golf in London in 1994. In 2009, he also opened The Polo House bar and club in Marbella, Spain, however it was shut down four years later. He participated in and won the Channel 5 reality competition “Back to Reality” in 2004. In 2006, Hewitt competed on ITV’s “The X Factor: Battle of the Stars,” placing sixth alongside his partner, model and media personality Rebecca Loos. The pair sang “Addicted to Love,” “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” “Rock DJ,” and “The Way You Make Me Feel” on the program before being eliminated.
James has one acting credit as well; it was in the 2002 movie “Bloody Sunday,” which was nominated for many honors and took home the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Feature Film. In season four of the Emmy-winning Netflix series “The Crown,” Daniel Donskoy played the role of Hewitt.

Personal Life
While Hewitt was still a member of the Household Cavalry and had been instructed to teach the princess how to ride, their relationship started. The romance was immediately reported in British publications, first in hints in Nigel Dempster’s Daily Mail Diary and then in full in the News of the World once the connection swiftly spilled out. The novel Princess in Love was released by Anna Pasternak in 1994, some time after he had left the service. Hewitt was a significant source, and it was claimed that between 1986 and 1991, he had a five-year relationship with Diana, Princess of Wales. In a 1995 interview with Panorama, Diana acknowledged the relationship. The next year, David Greene’s film Princess in Love, based on the book, was produced. Julie Cox and Christopher Villiers played the main characters.
After the romance ended, Hewitt contemplated ending his life. He intended to shoot himself while he was getting ready to go to France. He declared, “I threw a few items into my car and left for the boat to drive to France in order to shoot myself. My mother then insisted that she must accompany me. And if she hadn’t, I’m sure I would have shot myself. Therefore, I actually owe her my life.
Hewitt attempted to sell 64 of his private letters from Diana for £10 million in 2003. He was accused of betraying trust by selling the letters, and Sarah, Duchess of York, a divorcee from a British royal, denounced his behavior. According to reports, she reportedly remarked, “Betrayal, I think, is the most horrible, horrible, disloyal thing you can do to anyone.”
The media has often suggested that Hewitt, not Charles, is the real father of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, Diana’s second child (born 1984). Hewitt, who was also Diana’s police bodyguard, told the press in 2002 that Harry had already been born when the romance took place. He reaffirmed this in a 2017 interview. Diana referred to Harry as her “little Spencer” and said that her side of the family was responsible for his red hair.
