Biography
Henry Thompson Nicholas was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, when his parents divorced, he moved to Santa Monica, California, with his mother. He enrolled in the United States Air Force Academy after graduating from high school but left after three years owing to his height, which precluded him from becoming a pilot.
Following his graduation from the Air Force Academy, he attended UCLA and got a degree in Electrical Engineering. Later, he pursued and received both an MS and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UCLA.
Career
Nicholas joined TRW in Redondo Beach, California, where he met his future partner, Henry Samueli, a UCLA engineering professor. He later became the director of microelectronics at PairGain Technologies in Cerritos. In 1991, he co-founded Broadcom Corporation with Samueli
In 2003, Nicholas retired from Broadcom to focus on personal matters. That year, he and his wife established The Henry T. Nicholas III Foundation, initially named after both of them. It supports education, youth sports, technology, medical research, victims’ rights, and national defense.
The Nicholas Academic Center, founded in 2008, provides educational resources and mentorship in Santa Ana, California. Nicholas also generously donated to St. Margaret’s Episcopal School and partnered with UC Irvine for technological advancements in education. He’s a benefactor to Oakland Military Institute and various cultural institutions in Orange County.
