Ghana Speaker: I'll rather die than protect gay rights

The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has said that he would rather die than protect gay rights. Bagbin made the comments in an interview with Joy News on Tuesday, February 14.

“I will rather die than protect gay rights,” Bagbin said. “I will not support anything that is against the tenets of our religion and culture.”

Bagbin’s comments have sparked outrage among human rights groups and activists. They say that Bagbin’s comments are discriminatory and harmful to the LGBTQ+ community.

“The Speaker’s comments are deeply disappointing and harmful,” said Gifty Ampofo, a spokesperson for the Human Rights Advocacy Center. “They send a message of intolerance and hatred to the LGBTQ+ community.”

The LGBTQ+ community in Ghana faces significant discrimination. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Ghana, and LGBTQ+ people are often subjected to violence and harassment.

The crackdown sparked international condemnation. The United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union all condemned the crackdown and called on the Ghanaian government to respect the rights of LGBTQ+ people.

Despite the crackdown, the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana continues to fight for their rights. They have organized protests and demonstrations, and they have lobbied the government to change the law.
