Femi Gbajabiamila, the previous Speaker of the House of Representatives, has officially resigned from his position as a member of the 10th House. This decision comes after he resumed his role as the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu. Recall, that the former speaker had been appointed to be the Chief of Staff to the president after Tinubu was inaugurated as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Meanwhile, many people around Nigeria faulted the appointment due to the fact that he was still holding a public office when he was appointed, noting, it is not proper to hold two public posts at a time.
On Wednesday, Gbajabiamila presented his resignation letter on the House floor in the presence of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and fellow House members. After submitting the letter, Speaker Abbas proceeded to read its contents aloud to the assembly.
Following the reading of the letter, the former Speaker gracefully bowed before the new Speaker and his colleagues, receiving a warm reception of cheers and a standing ovation from the lawmakers. It was a fitting farewell for Gbajabiamila, who had served in various capacities during his impressive twenty-year career in the House, including Minority Leader, Majority Leader, and Speaker.
Prior to his resignation, Gbajabiamila had been reelected to represent the Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in Lagos State. He took his oath as a member of the House during the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly just the day before his new appointment.
