Biography

Nazi Germany’s Blomberg, Lippe, was the birthplace of Schröder. Almost six months after Gerhard’s birth, on October 4, 1944, Fritz Schröder, a lance corporal in the Wehrmacht, was killed in battle in Romania. His mother, Erika, supported her two kids and herself by working as a farm laborer.

The region where Schröder resided joined West Germany after the war. In Göttingen, he worked as an unskilled construction worker and sales clerk before completing an apprenticeship in retail sales at a Lemgo hardware store from 1958 to 1961. He also attended night classes to earn his general university entrance qualification. Because his father had died in battle, he was exempt from serving in the military. Schröder was successful in getting into a university in 1966 by completing the Abitur test at Westfalen-Kolleg in Bielefeld. He studied law at the  University of Göttingen from 1966 to 1971.

He passed his second bar test in 1976, and from then until 1990 he practiced law. One of Schröder’s most contentious cases was helping Horst Mahler, a founding member of the terrorist organization Baader-Meinhof, obtain both an early release from jail and authorization to practice law once more in Germany.

Gerhard Schröder Biography And Net Worth

Schröder started his legal profession in 1976 after passing his second bar test. Over the course of his 14-year legal career, he handled a number of contentious cases, most notably the one involving Horst Mahler, a founding member of the Baader-Meinhof terrorist organization, whom he assisted in getting an early release from jail.

Democratic Socialist Party

When Schröder joined the German Social Democratic Party in 1963, he began his career in politics. He rose to the position of federal head of the Young Socialists, the SPD’s youth division, fifteen years later. Schröder was elected to the German Bundestag in 1980, and he also rose to the position of SPD district chairman in Hanover. Later, in 1986, he was chosen to serve in Lower Saxony’s parliament. Schröder was appointed Minister-President of Lower Saxony and a director of the federal SPD when the SPD won the state elections in 1990. He presided over the Bundesrat as president in 1997 and 1998. Lower Saxony rose to the top of Germany’s deficit-ridden states under Schröder’s administration.

Chancellor of Germany

Schröder was appointed German chancellor after the 1998 general elections. Following Oskar Lafontaine’s resignation as SDP leader the following year, Schröder also assumed control of that position. In 2002, Schröder was elected to a second term as chancellor. Two years later, amid mounting internal party opposition to his reform plan, he announced his resignation as SPD chairman. In the 2005 federal elections, neither Angela Merkel’s coalition nor Schröder’s coalition won a majority in the legislature, although Merkel’s had a little larger lead in the popular vote. Merkel became the next chancellor of the grand coalition that Schröder, Merkel, and SPD leader Franz Müntefering planned to create. Late in November 2005, Schröder decided to retire from his position in the Bundestag.

Tony Blair and Schröder collaborated on an 18-page economic reform agenda during Schröder’s first term as chancellor. Additionally, he coordinated the transfer of the German government’s seat from Bonn to Berlin and spearheaded initiatives to finance renewable energy sources and establish civil unions for same-sex couples. However, despite a severe slowdown in economic development, Germany’s unemployment rate remained high. Schröder was condemned for his pro-car and pro-tax policies; while in government, he even participated on the Volkswagen board. He received criticism for endorsing Vladimir Putin, the brutal tyrant of Russia. Schröder’s initiatives to make amends for Nazi-era slave workers and his opposition to the Iraq War were more favorably regarded.

Post-Chancellorship

Schröder collaborated with Kurt Biedenkopf in settling a dispute over privatization plans at German railroad operator Deutsche Bahn after Schröder left public service. He was later chosen to referee a dispute in 2016 between the two largest German retailers, Edeka and REWE Group. Since his time as chancellor ended, Schröder has also held a variety of board roles, including those at the businesses CargoBeamer, Herrenknecht, and TNK-BP. He has also served on the boards of the Bundesliga Foundation, Dresden Frauenkirche, and the Wilhelm Busch Museum, among others.
