Gérard Louis-Dreyfus was born on June 21, 1932, in Paris, he had a French father, Pierre, and an American mother, Dolores, with Brazilian and Mexican roots. His great-grandfather, Léopold, founded the Louis Dreyfus Company.

After his parents’ divorce in 1940, he and his mother moved to the U.S., and his father joined the French Resistance in World War II.

Louis-Dreyfus pursued his education at Duke University, earning his BA in English literature in 1954. He then attended Duke University School of Law, obtaining his LLB in 1957.

Career

Louis-Dreyfus worked at the law firm Dewey Ballantine. In 1965, he joined his family’s business, the Louis Dreyfus Company, which specialized in agricultural, food processing, shipping, and other services. Despite the company’s near-bankruptcy, he transformed it into a leading commodities dealer. He was the chairman of Louis Dreyfus Energy Services, which specialized in oil trading and infrastructure.

In addition to business, Louis-Dreyfus was a poet who taught at Jackie Robinson High School. He also served as president of the Poetry Society of America and published poems in a variety of periodicals. His organization gave scholarships to black students and supported the Harlem Children’s Zone.

He developed a significant art collection and was an outspoken supporter of voting rights, donating $1 million to battle voter suppression.
