Biography
Father Dominick Ferraro and mother Antonetta Ferraro welcomed Geraldine into the world on August 26, 1935 in Newburgh, New York. Her mother worked as a seamstress and her father operated restaurants; both of her parents were natives of Italy. Three brothers preceded her in birth, but one passed away in infancy and the other at the age of three. When she was younger, she went to Mount Saint Mary’s in Newburgh. Her father had a heart attack when she was eight years old and passed away. While working in the apparel sector, Ferraro’s mother invested the rest of the family’s money. Still, she lost it, causing the family to relocate to a South Bronx neighborhood with a lower standard of living.
In 1947, Ferraro studied and resided at the private Marymount Academy in Tarrytown, New York, paying for his education with rent money from a family-owned property in Italy. She received a scholarship at Marymount Manhattan College when she graduated from the school in 1952. Geraldine became the first woman in her family to earn a college degree when she earned her Bachelor of Arts in English in 1956. She also passed the municipal test to obtain her teaching license, worked as a teacher for a while, and then chose to enroll in law school since she was unhappy with her position. In 1960, she graduated from Fordham University School of Law with a law degree. Only two ladies in her graduation class were female.

An American politician, diplomat, and attorney. She served in the US House of Representatives from 1979 to 1985. In 1984, she ran for vice president of the Democratic Party, becoming the first woman to be nominated for vice president by a significant American political party. She was running alongside former Vice President Walter Mondale. She also worked as a journalist, an entrepreneur, and an author.

Death
Ferraro experienced health problems after being given a cancer diagnosis in 1998. Also in March 2011, she had pneumonia. On March 26, 2011, she passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital.
