Gbenga Adeyinka: Nigerians Are in Trouble If Tinubu Can't Fix it

Ace comedian and entertainment figure, Gbenga Adeyinka, has voiced strong support for President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that the president has nothing to gain or lose if Nigeria fails to progress under his leadership.

Adeyinka made these comments during a podcast interview released by The Cable over the weekend.

Tinubu’s Leadership and Achievements as Lagos Governor

During the interview, Adeyinka, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), pointed to President Tinubu’s achievements as Lagos governor as evidence of his ability to handle Nigeria’s economic challenges.

He expressed confidence that Tinubu is the right person to lead Nigeria forward.

He said, “If I’m passionate about you, I’m passionate about you. That’s my problem. And I believe that, and please take this to the bank, if Asiwaju (Tinubu) cannot set Nigeria right, then we’re in trouble. With his capacity, with what he knows, with the fact that he has nothing to gain or lose anymore, if he cannot set Nigeria right, then we’re in trouble. I’m scared for Nigeria.

Views on Government Policies and Economic Decisions

Adeyinka acknowledged that, like many Nigerians, he also faces the consequences of some of Tinubu’s administration’s policies. However, he remains hopeful about certain economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies.

“Am I happy with the policies of Asiwaju? Some yes, some no. The man explained something. He said we have two options. We go the way we are going… or, we continue this way and everybody is happy, and your children suffer,” he said.

Adeyinka praised the removal of the fuel subsidy, calling it a necessary step to curb corruption. He criticized certain government spending decisions, however, pointing to the purchase of cars for members of the National Assembly as unnecessary.

“I support fuel subsidy removal totally because of the amount of corruption that was in it. But do I think they’ve done a good job by tightening their belts when we need to tighten ours? No,” he added.

Another point of focus in the podcast was the autonomy of local governments. Adeyinka praised efforts to give local governments direct access to funds, which he believes will improve grassroots governance.

“If you get the local government right, it’s like getting a family right. Society will be better,” he said.

A Call for Young Politicians in the National Assembly

Adeyinka encouraged young political figures like Labour Party’s Peter Obi, Omoyele Sowore, and Kingsley Moghalu to focus on gaining seats in the National Assembly. He believes this is where they can help rewrite the country’s laws and make lasting changes.

“If Peter Obi becomes president of Nigeria with the same structure we have in place, there’s nothing he’s going to do,” Adeyinka noted, emphasizing the need for systemic change from within.
