“G5 to Join APC,” Details of Tinubu’s Meeting with Members emerge
President Bola Tinubu met with G5, popularly called the Integrity Group, on Thursday amid speculation that the group may be planning to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tinub’s meeting with the G5 took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and was held behind closed doors and lasted for about two hours. The five former governors who attended the meeting were:
- Nyesom Wike (Rivers)
- Samuel Ortom (Benue)
- Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia)
- Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu)
- Seyi Makinde (Oyo)
The meeting was also attended by the current governor of Enugu, Peter Mbah. After the meeting, Makinde told reporters that the group visited President Tinubu to brief him on the latest happenings in the country and to reaffirm their commitment to fairness, equity, and justice.
He said, “Nation-building is a very difficult task. You have to keep evaluating, you know, what you’re doing, where you’re going. So, we have to keep seeing the President, you know, to let him know what is happening.
“The G5, the Integrity Group, came to let President Tinubu know what we stood for fairness, justice, and equity.” Makinde’s comments have fueled speculation that the G5 may be planning to join the APC. However, it is also possible that the group is simply trying to build bridges with the ruling party in order to advance their shared goals.
The G5 was formed in 2022 by five aggrieved politicians within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The group was formed in protest of the PDP’s decision to field Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.
The G5 members have been vocal in their criticism of Atiku, accusing him of being corrupt and lacking the necessary experience to be president. They have also expressed their support for the return of power to Southern Nigeria.
