Frank McCourt was born on August 19, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York City to Irish parents. Malachy Gerald McCourt, Sr., and Angela Sheehan struggled to make ends meet during the Great Depression. In 1934, the family moved back to Limerick, Ireland, in search of a better life. However, the situation there was dire.
Frank took on the task of providing for his family in the absence of his father, resorting to acts of survival. His formal education stopped when he was 13, and he worked numerous jobs, devoting most of his money to supporting his mother and siblings. With his savings, he took a ship to New York at the age of 19.

McCourt embarked on a journey from Ireland to New York City in October 1949. He secured a job at the Biltmore Hotel and faithfully sent part of his earnings back to his mother in Limerick. Eventually, his brothers and mother joined him in the bustling city. In 1951, he answered the call of duty, serving two years in the United States Army stationed in Bavaria. Once discharged, he took on various roles across New York City.
Using his G.I. Bill benefits, McCourt gained entry into New York University. Graduating in 1957, he ventured into teaching at several schools in the city.
Later, he pursued higher education, earning a master’s degree at Brooklyn College. His journey led him to become an English teacher at Stuyvesant High School, a role he embraced after a brief stint at Trinity College Dublin.
