FG Launches Subsidized Sale of 30,000 Metric Tons of Milled Rice

The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the sale of 30,000 metric tons of milled rice at a subsidized price of ₦40,000 per 50kg bag. This initiative, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aims to reduce the economic burden on civil servants and the general public amid ongoing financial challenges.

President Tinubu’s Commitment to Food Security

This latest intervention by the government follows earlier efforts, such as the release of 42,000 metric tons of assorted food commodities to vulnerable groups. The sale of the milled rice, which began in Abuja, is part of broader government measures to enhance food security and combat rising food prices.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, praised President Tinubu’s leadership in tackling the issue of food insecurity. “This food intervention is timely, given the current economic challenges facing the country,” Kyari said.

Global Disruptions and Nigeria’s Food Supply

Senator Kyari also highlighted the impact of global disruptions in food supply chains on Nigeria, stressing the need for local interventions like the subsidized rice sale. “The initiative is essential as it addresses the immediate needs of Nigerians struggling with the high cost of food,” he noted.

The government has implemented strict measures to ensure transparency and fairness in the distribution of rice. Kyari emphasized that the “one man, one 50kg bag” policy will be enforced to prevent hoarding and guarantee that the rice reaches as many people as possible.

How to Buy Subsidised Rice

To ensure fair access, the government has outlined a clear process for purchasing the subsidized rice. Buyers must present their National Identification Number (NIN) and provide their phone numbers for verification purposes.

Haruna Abutu, the Director of Food and Strategic Reserve at the Ministry of Agriculture, explained the steps involved in obtaining the rice. According to him, civil servants must also be registered on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) to qualify.

“Let us work together to ensure that the dream of the administration to uphold the fundamental right to food for all Nigerians is achieved,” Abutu urged, encouraging citizens to follow the procedure.

Simplified Payment and Collection Process

To avoid overcrowding and ensure efficiency, payments will be made electronically. Buyers will receive receipts indicating their collection points.

Abutu assured the public that multiple sales points would be established nationwide to facilitate smooth distribution and maintain transparency throughout the process.

“We are committed to making sure the rice reaches those who need it the most,” Abutu said, promising that the government would maintain oversight to prevent any issues during distribution.
