A 2021 research recently revealed that Nigeria ranks second among the countries with the highest rate of paternity fraud in the world after Jamaica. Despite numerous media houses trying to counter the report as unfounded, numerous stories across social media platforms suggest otherwise. Hence numerous Nigerian men have become doubting Thomas in their marriages as they often initiate the expensive DNA tests, mostly to authenticate the biological father of a child.
According to an online report, SMART DNA, a private DNA testing center based in Lagos State conducted thousands of DNA tests between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023. This just being one of the thousands of DNA testing centers across the country suggests that we having a paternity fraud pandemic across the country.

Nedu Wazobia
Chinedu Ani Emmanuel popularly known as Nedu Wazobia is a Nigerian on-air personality, broadcast journalist, comedian, and content creator. He is famously known for his pidgin rendition of the daily news on the Wazobia FM 94.1 Lagos radio station. In 2013, Nedu married Uzoamaka Ohiri and the estranged couple was blessed with three children together, but the marriage ended in 2018 Nedu claimed his marriage had been dissolved but his estranged wife has said otherwise and has challenged him to produce the divorce papers.
However, on Friday, September 3, 2021, Nedu was called out for Domestic violence by Uzoamaka Ohiri accused of battering her a few weeks after she delivered their child by C-Section, September 4 2021 Nedu responded to his wife’s allegations, and denied physically violating her. According to Nedu who later responded saying their marriage was plagued with a lot of issues.One of which was continuous infidelity from her side, which led to conducting a paternity test on their first kids which led to the revelation that their first son was not a biological son, even though he was born within the period of their marriage.
To substantiate his claims a copy of the DNA test, which was conducted by a forensic laboratory, Viaguard Accu-metrics, located in Toronto, Canada. Although Uzoamaka had said she did not cheat on her husband during their brief marriage, according to her she was visibly pregnant during the wedding which everyone could see, Uzoamak claimed that shortly after her previous relationship ended she decided to get to know Nedu while they got married while she was pregnant. she said their marriage was plagued with domestic violence and that it was not the DNA test report that led to their eventual divorce.
Tunde Thomas
Over 1400 people (as of press time) have signed a petition asking the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to sack the managing director of First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Adam Nuru. The petition alleged that the bank chieftain was responsible for the demise of Tunde Thomas who later died of depression on December 16, 2020. According to the petition, the FCMB MD allegedly had an affair with his staff, Moyo Thomas, who was the deceased’s wife, resulting in two children.
According to online reports which alleged that Moyo informed her husband about her leaving Nigeria for the United States with the kids, but later informed her husband after her arrival that the children didn’t belong to him. Mr. Tunde Thomas later met someone else whom he was going to remarry but didn’t recover from the first Marriage issues, He had a cardiac arrest 2 days before introduction to a pregnant new girlfriend.
The case remains gross misconduct based on ethical grounds and unjustifiable economic oppression by the elites (Adam Nuru) against the less privileged in society. The MD has done everything possible to sweep this case under the carpet. An Akure-based human rights lawyer, Bolanle Cole, has also begun his own Twitter campaign to compel the CBN and FCMB to sack the bank chieftain.

Olanrewaju Kolawole
Olanarewaju Kolawole was just an ordinary Nigerian citizen until he made the news as one of the famous Nigerians, whose family got split as a result of a DNA test. According to a report, he conducted a DNA test on his four children jointly raised by his wife, Toyin Tella. However, the DNA test revealed that none of the children were his
This made Kolawole cry out and seek help from well-meaning Nigerians. He and his now estranged wife, ToyinTella appeared on numerous platforms to share their perspectives on the incident. According to the Daily Post report, Kolawole and his wife, Toyin, got married in 2007 and the marriage produced four children.
He said, “I want Nigerians to come to my rescue because I must not suffer this in vain. I married Toyin in 2007 and gave birth to four children. She gave birth to four children, but none of them belong to me after findings from a DNA test.” However, the wife disagreed with the results. She said that she was not there when they took the sample and did not know which samples were taken.
“I don’t accept the result. I don’t accept it because I was not there when they took samples, and I don’t know which sample they took, so I don’t accept it. I can’t accept it because I know how I conceived those children,” she declared.
Olatunde Ayeni
Popular Nigerian millionaire businessman, Olatunde Ayeni is one of the famous victims of a DNA scandal in Nigeria. The 56-year-old man was accused by an Abuja-based lady, Adaobi Alagwu of fathering her child.
Ayeni however refuted the paternity claims. In an official statement making rounds on the internet, He stated that a DNA test conducted to ascertain the paternity claims revealed that he is not in any way connected to Adaobi’s daughter He however, admitted that he had a relationship with Adaobi in the past but had put the past behind him.
“To allay any form of speculation based on Miss Adaobi’s claims, the Ayeni family is not in any way connected to the child and we will never be. Thus I refute the rumor of my connection to her and her mother. “I wish to affirm that I’m a father to three wonderful children with Abiola, my delectable wife. These are the legitimate scions of the Ayeni dynasty. I don’t have any child elsewhere”, he said.
Conclusion
To complete this piece it is important to note that paternity fraud is a complex issue in Nigeria, with limited data available to indepthly analyse the phenomenon. There are reports that suggest that the reason for the higher level of paternity fraud in the country can not only be attributed to misattributed paternity or infidelity on the part of the women, as there are so many cases of children swapping in Nigerian hospitals. However, the case may be, we hope the necessary bodies look at the facts and take the important steps to put a caution to this phenomenon.
