One will quickly argue what Jay Z and Beyoncé came to do in a place like Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State. As part of his African tour, Shawn Carter, a.k.a, Jay Z and his wife Beyonce truly visited Ilorin in 2006.
The tour first commenced with performances in Accra, Lagos, Cape Town, Luanda, Durban, Johannesburg and Dar Es Salaam. Following Jay Z and Beyonce were other global music icons that stormed Lagos to be part of the event part of the ThisDay Music Festival.
During this period the duo was invited by the former Governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki. According to Saraki, he is a big fan of the power couple prompted why he named a street after the American rapper in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital. The street was called “Shawn Jay-Z Carter Road”
While enjoying their stay in Ilorin, Jay-Z was conferred with a chieftaincy title by the Emir of Ilorin Alhaji Ibrahim Gambari. The American rapper was turbaned as the Serikin Waka of Ilorin.
