Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (Formerly Anambra State University) has introduced Native Medicine as a course as they stated that interested persons can now study it as a course.

This was disclosed during a press conference in Akwa, the state capital by the  Special Adviser to the Anambra State Governor, Mr Willie Obiano, on medicine and herbal practice.

He stated that the university has commenced an advanced diploma programme on Native Medicine course, any interested person/student must possess a minimum of the first degree in any field of study to be admitted for the course.

Moreover, he noted that the government wants a situation whereby Traditional Medicine is practised and certified in Nigeria as Western Medicine is trained and certified in the country.

He furthermore explained that the need to study Traditional Medicine as a profession was responsible for the development of the state.

He added that he was working with two professors of pharmacy as technical advisers.

“When I was appointed, I found out that traditional medicine practice was all comers’ affairs. Some practitioners would claim that they were born with the skills.

“In the medical line where I belong, you must go to school and obtain a certificate before you can practice. This is what we want to replicate in traditional medicine,” Ibezim said.
