Biography

Charles Micheal Lorre was born Charles Micheal Levine but changed his surname to Lorre at the age of 26. He was born in Plainview, New York on the 18th of October, 1952 to a Jewish family. Chuck Lorre attended State University of New York at Potsdam but dropped out after two years to pursue his career as a songwriter. Meanwhile, during his two years in the college, he “majored in rock ‘n’ roll and pot and minored in LSD”.

Early Career

After dropping out of school, Chuck Lorre toured the United States as a guitarist and songwriter. He wrote French Kissin’ in the USA which Deborah Harry recorded for her 1986 Rockbird album and it became a UK Top 10 hit. In the 1980s, he wrote scripts for animated shows and his first project was the DIC version of Healthcliff. He also co-wrote the 1987 tv series soundtrack, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Dennis Challen Brown. In the late 1980s, he started writing for sitcoms, and joined the writing staff of Roseanne but was fired with stating irreconcilable creative differences. However, his time on Roseanne impressed producers and it led him to create his first show, Frannie’s Turn which was cancelled 5 weeks after.

His second show as a creator, Grace Under Fire premiered on ABC in 1993 and it was nominated at the 52nd Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series. His next show was Cybill which aired for four seasons on CBS and received critical acclaim. Chuck Lorre later signed a deal with Carsey-Werner Productions in 1994 and moved to 20th Century to create his next project in 1995.

In partnership with Dottie Zicklin, he created his fourth show, Dharma & Greg which premiered in 1996. The show received eight Golden Globe nominations, six Emmy Award nominations, and six Satellite Awards nominations. In 2000, he signed a long-term deal (which still stands to date) with Warner Bros. Television. He created his fifth show, Two and a Half Men with co-creator Lee Aronsohn. 

Career Success

The show premoered on CBS in 2003 and became the highest-rated sitcom in America. In 2011, CBS put the show on a break due to several incidents of production shutdowns allegedly because of Charlie Sheen’s problems relating to drug and alcohol abuse. An attack (verbal) reached Chuck Lorre via a radio interview on this note. Charlie Sheen was eventually fired from the show and filed a $100 million lawsuit against Chuck Lorre and Warner Bros. Television for “wrongful termination”. Chuck Lorre finally hired Ashton Kutcher as his replacement for the show’s subsequent four seasons.

His next show, The Big Bang Theory with co-creator Bill Prady was premiered on CBS in 2007 and it was the highest rated comedy series in the United States. Chuck Lorre was the executive producer of Mike & Molly, created by Mark Roberts which premiered on CBS in September 2010. His seventh show, Mom which he created with Gemma Baker and Eddie Gorodetsky premiered on CBS on September 23, 2013. The second season was announced by CBS the following year, and it ran for eight seasons.

The show got several negative reviews and the makers were also criticized for the show’s humor, the casting of a South-African-born Indian actor to play an Afghan lead and use his inauthentic accent, and so on.

Chuck Lorre has the unique vanity cards for Chuck Lorre Productions and his frequent use of it has perhaps turned it to a trademark. He started with Dharma & Greg and has eversince, continually used it for every of his shows.

He is known for putting different messages at the end of every episodes of his productions and the messages are usually in the formats of editorials, essay, or observation of life. The card is shown for only a few seconds at most, therefore, longer messages would require the viewer to pause to have a clearer look/read, or visit Lorre’s website where he posts the cards. Although CBS has censored Lorre’s vanity cards on several occasions, Chuck Lorre posts both the censored and uncensored versions of the cards.

Also, during Charlie Sheen’s controversial departure from Two and a Half Men in 2011, Chuck Lorre referenced Sheen in several cards. He also used the vanity card for the series finale, Of Course He’s Dead, to address the circumstances of Charlie Sheen’s absence from the episode.

Chuck Lorre published a compilation of his vanity cards in a coffee table book titled What Doesn’t Kill Us Makes Us Bitter, released on October 16, 2012. The book takes its title from Vanity Card #1, which first aired following the first episode of Dharma & Greg on September 24, 1997.

During The Big Bang Theory episode, The Hook-Up Reverberation, Vanity Card #463 was displayed. It discussed he would stop writing the vanity cards. But interestinly, he resumed the cards. On March 5, 2015, he released Card #493 as a tribute to the late Leonard Nimoy, who had guest-starred on the show as the voice of Sheldon’s conscience three years earlier.

Personal Life

Chuck Lorre has publicly discussed his struggle with the autoimmune disease ulcerative colitis, and depression, worry, and rage.

In 1979, he got married to his then-business partner, Paula Smith but they ended both marriage and partnership 13 years later. Meanwhile, their union produced two children. Later on, he married Karen Witter who is an actress, model, and writer, but their marriage also ended in divorce ten years later. In 2018, he married Arielle Mandelson and he filed for divorce in 2022.
