He had minor television roles, including the second episode of News Radio’s second season, ‘No, It’s Not Entirely Based on Julie’s Life’, as a Photoshop employee. He moved to New York to work on Saturday Night Live from 1996 to 2003.

From there he had recurring characters which included Mr. Peepers, Mango, Azrael Abyss, Kyle DeMarco of The DeMarco Brothers, Gay Hitler, Suel Forrester (known as “daimyo”) and, most notably, half of the Butabi Brothers with Will Ferrell, another SNL (and Groundlings) cast member known for his headbutting. Kattan and Ferrell continued the characters from the 1998 film A Night at the Roxbury.

2007–2017: Post-SNL activities

Kattan was slated to play Xanthias in the Broadway theatrical production of Stephen Sondheim’s The Frogs, but he was replaced during previews by Roger Bart. He was to host the game show Gameshow In My Head and even filmed the pilot episode in Hollywood. However, he was replaced by Joe Rogan for the series.

He appeared in a Diet of Pepsi Max commercial during Super Bowl XLII in 2008 which featured the song What Is Love and had numerous actors in the commercial performing the top bob from A Night at the Roxbury.

In August 2009, he starred in the Independent Film Channel (IFC) mini-series Bollywood Hero, where he describes himself and the difficulties he faces after a career as a comedian, trying to achieve leading man status.

In the fall of 2009 he started falling out but appeared in a supporting role in The Middle. He played Bob, a colleague of Frankie Hecks at Mr. Ehlert’s car dealership. He appeared on an episode of How I Met Your Mother as a star in ‘The Wedding Bride’, a fictional film in the series.

He played the role of Jed Mosely, a character based on main character Ted with an arrogant personality. He reappeared as the character while the gang was watching its sequel, Wedding Bride 2. On December 17, 2011, he made an appearance on Saturday Night Live’s Christmas show, hosted by Jimmy Fallon and again briefly on the final episode of the 37th season of SNL. .

In January 2014, he was part of the cast of a contestant who was eliminated on the 1st of Episode 2 of Rachael vs Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off (hosted by Guy Fieri and Rachael Ray). In June 2014, he reprized his role as former SNL character Mango in a preview of Missy Elliott’s “Shut It Down” protege Sharaya J via a T by Alexander Wang campaign. In 2017, he had a contestant on Season 24 plus Dancing with the Stars paired with professional dancer Witney Carson. He was the first famous dancer eliminated.

He reunited with fellow SNL alumni Jimmy Fallon, Horatio Sanz and Tracy Morgan as well as special guest Ariana Grande in December 2018 on the cold open of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The quartet (and Grande) reprized their signature performance of “I Wish It Was Christmas Today.” It was the first time since 2011 that Fallon, Sanz, Kattan and Morgan were all present for the performance of the song.
