BIOGRAPHY OF CHRIS HERREN

Chris Herren is an American motivational speaker and former professional basketball player who played in the NBA and several leagues overseas.

He attended BMC Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts from 1990 to 1994. His father, grandfather, older brother, and three uncles played basketball have history in Durfee. He finished his basketball career at Durfee High with a total of 2073 points, the most points scored by an individual at the school to date.

He also turned down offers from the University of Kentucky and Duke University to play at Boston College. He was named Boston Globe and Gatorade Player of the Year in his senior year. Herren was also named to the McDonald’s All-America team and was the central character in a Durfee High basketball book called Fall River Dreams.

Herren has spoken to over one million students, athletes, and community members, sparking honest discussions on the topics of substance use disorders and wellness. He founded The Herren Project in 2011 to help individuals and their family members find treatment and support for the disease of addiction. The Herren Project is now part of a larger community that guides individuals and their families through recovery by working to break the stigma of addiction. Also raise awareness of the dangers of substance use and encourage positive decision-making to overcome life’s challenges.

CHRIS HERREN BASKETBALL

Herren entered Boston University and was featured in several magazines such as Rolling Stone and Sports Illustrated, promoting his possible success. He failed a drug test for marijuana and cocaine before playing. In his first game at Boston College, he scored 14 points in 21 minutes, but broke his wrist and was ruled out for the entire 1994-95 season. Within three months of his injury, he failed two more drug tests for marijuana and cocaine, eventually being kicked out of the team and out of college.

Herren transferred to Fresno State to play basketball under Coach Jerry Tarkanian. He made his sophomore debut on Dec. 10, 1996, for the Bulldogs after spending one year, under NCAA transfer rules. In his sophomore year, he averaged 31 points per game over his final four games and finished the season averaging 17.5 points per game. Herren failed another drug test on November 25, 1997. He went to a rehab center for 28 days and returned to the team on January 10, 1998.

He scored 29 points in the second round of the Great Alaska Shootout against No. 1-ranked Duke in his senior year. Fresno State lost the game, 93–82, which was nationally televised. He then played 86 games at Fresno State where he averaged 15.1 points and 5.1 assists per game.

He entered the NBA draft and was selected by the Denver Nuggets in the second round with the 33rd overall pick after his senior year at Fresno. He received his first time as a regular starter the following year as a member of the Boston Celtics. Coach Rick Pitino slotted him into the starting lineup after a 2-3 start. Herren started seven games in a row, resulting in a 4–3 record while playing 29 minutes a night. He ended up playing 70 games from 1999 to 2001 as a member of the Nuggets and Celtics. Overall, Herren averaged 3.2 points and 2.4 assists per game for his NBA career. He went to play professionally for teams in Italy, Poland, Turkey, China, Germany and Iran after being released by the Celtics.

CHRIS HERREN DRUG USE

Herren struggled with drug addiction for much of his career. He started using painkillers such as OxyContin, Vicodin and Percocet while playing for the Boston Celtics. He was also charged with possession of heroin in the parking lot of a Dunkin’ Donuts in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He overdosed on heroin and crashed into a utility pole in June 2004 in Fall River, Massachusetts. According to paramedics, Herren had been dead for 30 seconds.

ESPN aired a documentary, Unguarded, directed by Jonathan Hock, based on Herren’s basketball career and drug-related issues in 2011. It was later announced that Unguarded had been nominated for two Emmys: Outstanding Sports Documentary and exceptional editing on March 20, 2012.

Herren’s documentary ‘The First Day’ follows Chris Herren from the film ‘Unguarded’. Day One premiered on ESPN on July 16, 2019. Hock was moved and intrigued by Herren’s experience which he documented in Unguarded. Hock took his cameras and microphones and followed Herren to a dozen speeches on the East Coast. This culminated in ‘The First Day’, an hour-long documentary (including commercials) showing how Herren’s talks evolved.
