Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Adichie was born in Enugu State, the eastern part of Nigeria on 15 September 1977.

However, she was the fifth of six children of James Nwoye Adichie who worked as a professor of statistics at the University of Nigeria She was raised in Nsukka Enugu State. Her mother, Grace Ifeoma was the university’s first female registrar.

After primary school, she proceeded to UNN’s secondary school for secondary education. She proceeded to the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) after secondary school to study medicine and Pharmacy. The super talented author dropped out of UNN after a year and some months.

At the age of 19, she enrolled at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to study Communication and Political science.

During her time at UNN, she was an editor of “The Compass”, a magazine operated by Catholic medical students.

While she was growing up, she drew her inspiration y reading Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart”.

Career

Chimamanda Adichie began her literary works with the publication of a poem in 1997 called “Decision”. For The Love of Biafra” is a play that followed ‘Decision’ in 1998.

She got a Caine prize in 2002 for her work in ‘You in America’ and ‘The Harmattan Morning’, and then awards for her work in The American Embassy, and Zeotrope.

Having gotten writing inspiration from China Achebe and Buchi Emecheta, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wrote her first novel titled “Purple Hibiscus” in 2003. The novel got her so many awards and nomination

After Purple Hibiscus, Chimamanda Adichie wrote another award-winning novel “Half of a Yellow Sun” in 2006.

Her writing career did not stop in 2006 rather it continued till 2009 when she wrote “The Things Around Your Neck” and 2013 “Americanah”.

Moreover, Chimamanda Adichie has delivered some lectures. Some of her lectures have gotten international recognition while some got her an award. Some of the lectures include: Danger of a single story delivered to TED in 2009, and We should all be Feminist was given in 2013 and turned into a book in 2104.

Apart from writing novels, she also writes short fiction. These short fictions: Checking out 2013, Apollo 2015, The arrangements, A work of friction 2016.

Just like Chimamanda Adichie, the husband is also a multi-award-winning medical doctor who specializes in Family Medicine at the University of Scotland.

Children

Chimamanda Adichie and her husband Dr. Ivara Esegee have one daughter together. Their daughter was born in 2016.
