Early Life

On March 30, 1968, in the small town of Charlemagne, Québec, which is located 50 kilometers from Montréal, Celine Dion was born. She was Thérèse Tanguay and Adhémar Dion’s fourteenth child. The Dion family had modest means but was always full of love. There were so many kids in the house that Celine’s mother had to put her youngest one to sleep in a drawer.

Born into a large family from Charlemagne, Quebec, she emerged as a teen star in her home country with a series of French-language albums during the 1980s.

She was given the name Celine after the song of the same name by French singer Hugues Aufray, who had recorded it two years prior to her birth. Music had always played a significant role in the Dion family. At her brother Michel’s wedding on August 13, 1973, the five-year-old Céline made her first public appearance. Dion sang the song “Du fil, des aiguilles et du coton” (needle, thread and cotton) by Christine Charbonneau. She continued to perform alongside her siblings in Le Vieux Baril, or “The Old Barrel,” the family’s little piano bar. She had imagined herself as a performer since she was a young child.

Career Success

At the age of 12, she wrote her first song, with the help of her mother and her brother Jacques: “Ce n’était qu’un rêve (It was only a dream)” But it certainly was not just a dream! And thanks to her mother, that dream would start to become a reality. Thérèse sent a cassette of the song to impresario René Angélil whom she later marry eventually in 1994 and he launched her career with the album La Voix du bon Dieu (1981; “The Voice of God”).

He invited her to an appointment in his office, handed her a pencil and said, “Here’s your microphone. Now sing as though you were in front of a sold-out audience.” Celine sang. On the spot, René became her biggest fan. It was the beginning of the most wonderful artist-manager relationship in the history of show business.

In 1982, Celine won the gold medal at the 13th Yamaha World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo. She sang “Tellement j’ai d’amour pour toi”, written by Marnay and Giraud, for an audience of 115 million TV viewers. She was just 14.

Next, she made her first appearance on TV in France, on famed program Champs-Élysées hosted by Michel Drucker. To this day, the entire country recalls the moment when the host announced to his audience: “Remember her name: Celine Dion!” In 1983, she became the first Canadian to be awarded a gold album in France. It would not be her last.

That same year, at the ADISQ gala honoring the best in Quebec music, she received her first four Félix Awards. She has a record 45 victories to her credit.
