Bud Adams was born on January 3, 1923, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, to K. S. Boots Adams and Blanch Keeler Adams.
He belonged to the Cherokee Nation through his maternal line. His great-grandmothers, Cherokee women, married European-American men linked to trade and oil.
In 1939, Adams’s father took over as president of Phillips Petroleum Company, succeeding founder Frank Phillips. Adams’s uncle, William Wayne Keeler, became CEO of the company and later Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.
Bud Adams, too, had notable Cherokee ancestors. He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1940, briefly attended Menlo College, and then completed an engineering degree at the University of Kansas. There, he played briefly on the varsity football team, alongside future politician Bob Dole.
Career
In 1959, Bud Adams tried to buy the Chicago Cardinals to bring them to Houston. When that fell through, he teamed up with Lamar Hunt to create the American Football League, now part of the NFL.
Adams gained fame as the owner of the Tennessee Titans, previously the Tennessee Oilers. He co-founded the Nashville Kats in 2005. Adams also had success in the petroleum business as CEO of Adams Resources & Energy Inc.
He owned Lincoln-Mercury car dealerships and was involved in the Houston Mavericks ABA basketball team from 1967 to 1969.
