Benjamin Dube was born on January 23, 1962, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is the last of five children and the son of Grace Dube and Benjamin Dube Sr. His father was an evangelist and guitarist while his mother was a singer and equally a preacher. While Grace passed away on December 31, 2019, Benjamin’s father was gruesomely murdered by gangsters in 1976 when Benjamin was only 14 years old.

Benjamin Sr. died at the hands of gang members who were angry about his evangelism to the rest of the gang members who yielded and became Christian believers. Shortly after his death, the Dube family released a song translated as “Father Forgives”. Grace has told the story of how one of the gang members confessed to killing her husband and how she was compelled to forgive and evangelize him.

Prior to the death of his father, Dube has been singing with his family since he was seven years old, exposing him to music at a very tender age. His educational background is still unverified for now, however, his education is said to have been slowed down as a result of the early death of his father.
