Biography
Anna Paquin was born in Winnipeg on the 24th of July, 1982. Her mother, Mary (née Brophy) was an English teacher while her father, Brian Paquin was a high school physical education teacher. She has two older siblings; Andrew, a director, and Katya.
When Anna Paquin was four years old, her family moved to New Zealand. She participated in gymnastics, ballet, swimming, and downhill skiing, she also had musical childhood hobbies which were playing the viola, cello, and piano. During her stay in New Zealand, she attended Raphael House Rudolf Steiner School in Lower Hutt until she was nine, then attended Hutt Intermediate School afterwards, from 1994-1995.
She started her secondary education in Wellington at Wellington’s Girl’s College and completed her high school diploma at Windward School in Los Angeles. This was because she had to move to the US with her mother following her parent’s divorce in 1995. In June 2000, she graduated from Windward School and completed the school’s community service requirement by working in a soup kitchen and at a special education centre. The birth of her acting career came when Director Jane Campion was looking for a little girl to play a main role in The Piano, and a newspaper advertisement was run just to announce an open audition. Anna Paquin’s sister was the one who read the ad and decided to give it a try alongside her friend. This, however, inspired Anna Paquin to audition. Fortunately, when the director, Jane Campion met Anna Paquin, she was impressed with her performance (being a nine-year-old) in the monologue about Flora’s father, then, she was chosen from among the 5000 candidates that applied.

On the 1st of April 2010, Anna Paquin came out as bisexual in a public service announcement for the Give a Damn campaign as part of the True Colors Fund, an advocacy group organised by Cyndi Lauper dedicated to LGBT equality. The True Colors Fund was created to “inspire and engage everyone, especially straight people, to become active participants in the advancement of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality”.
In a video, Anna Paquin was featured stating, “I’m Anna Paquin.
