Early Political Career
Tambuwal began his legislative career in 1999 as the Personal Assistant on Legislative Affairs to Senator Abdullahi Wali, the then Senate Leader. He opted to fight for a legislative seat in the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency in 2003. On the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, he was elected to the House of Representatives (ANPP). He switched to the Democratic People’s Party (DPP) a few months before the 2007 general elections, along with former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa. When the DPP denied former ANPP legislators return tickets, Tambuwal returned to the ANPP, where he eventually obtained a ticket for the election.
However, when the ANPP’s governorship candidate for Sokoto State in the 2007 election, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, defected to the PDP, Tambuwal followed suit.
Tambuwal held a number of positions in the House. He was appointed Minority Leader of the House in 2005 until he defected to the PDP. When he was re-elected to the House in 2007, he was also named Deputy Chief Whip.
Tambuwal has served on many House committees, including the Rules and Business, Communications, Judiciary, Inter-Parliamentary, and Water Resources Committees. He was also a member of the House Ad Hoc Constitutional Review Committee.
Later Political Career
He chaired the ad hoc committee that evaluated the report of the contentious power probe committee led by Ndudi Elumelu, as well as the House Sub-Committee on the Bill to Amend the Land Use Act and the House Committee on Power.
He led the Nigerian delegation to the African, Caribbean, Pacific, and European Union Parliamentary Assembly (ACP-EU) and served as Vice-Chairman of the ACP-EU Economic Committee in Prague, Czech Republic, in April 2009. Tambuwal formally switched from the ruling PDP to the opposition APC on October 28, 2014, and his security details were withdrawn a few days later by the Inspector General of Police, a move that Nigerians condemned as brutal and undemocratic.
Mr Olisa Agabakogba (SAN), a legal luminary, believes that the police authority erred in withdrawing Tambuwal’s assistance because officers are not supposed to interpret and administer the law.
Tambuwal ran for and won the governorship election in Sokoto State on April 11, 2015. On May 29, 2015, he was sworn in. He abolished the entire State Executive Council on July 4, 2018, during his term. Afterwards, Tambuwal moved from the All Progressives Congress to the People’s Democratic Party on August 1, 2018. After the first tenure, he was re-elected governor of Sokoto state in the March 9 2019 gubernatorial election. And also in March 22, 2019 supplemental election, polling 512,002 votes while his competitor Mr Aliyu of the All Progressive Congress polled 511,660 votes.
The Presidency Ambition
In October 2018, Tambuwal declared that he was running for president and said he was obligated to seek the highest office to “revive the dying economy”. His announcement came just hours after Senate President Bukola Saraki officially entered the contest for the PDP ticket.
A number of reasons, including his youthful age among the competitors, political experience, and clean records from corruption charges, increased his chances of going into the primary. Also, analysts projected that if Tambuwal won the PDP ticket, he would provide a significant challenge to incumbent President Muhammad Buhari who was then fighting for re-election.
In the end, Tambuwal finished second with 693 delegate votes, following Atiku Abubakar, who won with 1,532 votes in the Port Harcourt primary on October 6, 2018. Also, Bukola Saraki got 317 votes, while Rabiu Kwankwaso got 158.
