The arrested leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, recently arrived at the Abuja high court on Thursday to face his ongoing trial.

Kanu who was arrested and extradited to Nigeria on the 29th of June 2021  was charged with an alleged act of terrorism and treasonable felony.

During the last proceeding, in which Nnamdi Kanu was absent, the federal government slammed several charges against him.

On Monday 18 October, The Federal Government has filed an amended seven-count amended charge against  Kanu, the amended charge, which was filed by the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, stated

  1. That Nnamdi Kanu in London, United Kingdom, did a broadcast on Radio Biafra from London where he declared the secession of the southeast, south-south and some parts of Kogi and Benue states from Nigeria to form the Independent State of Biafra.
  2. That Nnamdi Kanu insulted the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammdu Buhari whom he referred to as a “pedophile, a terrorist, an idiot, and an embodiment of evil” through his radio broadcast from London.
  3. That Nnamdi Kanu imported a radio transmitter identified as TRAM 50L that he hid inside a container in Ihiala, Anambra state.
  4. That Nnamdi Kanu Declared himself a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a secessionist group that has been banned by the government.
  5. That Nnamdi Kanu committed an act of terrorism when he use his Radio broadcast from London to encourage Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra to attack Nigeria security operatives and their family members.
  6. That Nnamdi committed an act of Terrorism when he made a broadcast that “In 2 weeks’ time, what will happen will shake the world, people will die, the whole world will standstill.”
  7. That Nnamdi Kanu committed an act of terrorism when he declared a Sit at home order, and threaten people that refuse to obey with death.

However, when the court charges were read to him during the court session on Thursday, the IPOB leader pleaded not guilty. The IPOB leader has spent approximately 18 weeks in detention since his re-arrest for June 2021.
