Early Life and Education
Abdulfatah Ahmed was born in Share, Ifelodun Local Government Area, Kwara State, on December 29, 1963. He attended Government College Funtua in Katsina State from 1973 to 1978. After which he went to Kwara State College of Technology (now Kwara State Polytechnic) in Ilorin from 1978 to 1980. He continued his education at the University of Ilorin, where he received a BSc in Chemistry in 1986 and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1992.
Abdulfatah Ahmed served as a lecturer in Organic Chemistry and later became Acting Head of Department at Federal College of Arts and Science, Sokoto, in Sokoto State from 1986 to 1990. Afterwards, he became an Assistant Manager at District Savings and Loans, Lagos from 1991 to 1993. And in 1993, he started work with Guaranty Trust Bank in the Credit and Marketing Unit. In 1998, he moved to Societe Generale Bank Nigeria as a Senior Manager/Group Head, Consumer Banking. Later, he became Public Sector Group for the North West region.

Political Career
At the beginning of Abubakar Bukola Saraki’s Kwara State Administration, Ahmed was appointed Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development (2003–2009). He was afterwards appointed Commissioner of the newly formed Ministry of Planning and Economic Development. During this time, Ahmed was also Treasurer of Nigeria’s Forum of Commissioners of Finance for six years, as well as Chairman of Kwara State’s Budget Formulation Committee and Economic Team. Additionally, he was appointed to the board of directors of the International Aviation College, Ilorin As well as the Chairman of the Millennium Development Goals Implementation Committee and Shonga Farms Holdings Ltd.
Ahmed got 695 votes in the PDP primaries, defeating Chief Bashir Omoloja Bolarinwa (39 votes) and Alhaji Yekinni Alabi (9 votes). Ahmed received 254,969 votes in the elections held on April 26, 2011. Dele Belgore of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) finished second with 152,580 votes.
On July 31, 2018, Ahmed announced his defection from the All Progressives Congress, shortly after his predecessor and Senate President Bukola Saraki announced his departure from the APC.

Fraud Allegations and Arrest
Ahmed was arrested by Nigerian officials in December 2020 in connection with his alleged involvement in a long-running financial fraud. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission did this while also looking into his wife’s involvement. The fraud could have totaled two billion naira. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission apprehended Ahmed for the second time on May 17, 2021, after seven hours of questioning over around ₦9 billion allegedly diverted from the Kwara State government. The funds were allegedly misappropriated during Ahmed’s tenure as Governor and as Finance Commissioner in the Bukola Saraki administration.
In May 2021, the Judicial Commission of Inquiry on the Sales of Kwara State Government Assets between May 1999 and May 2019 – a commission set up by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, accused Ahmed of selling state assets to cronies at suspiciously low prices and recommended that Ahmed and his predecessor, Bukola Saraki, be prosecuted. Also, Saraki and others were accused of illegally selling government properties outside of the state and excessively mismanaging public assets.
