1. FBI Confirms Tinubu Was Subject of 1990s Drug-Trafficking Investigation

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was the subject of a criminal investigation linked to drug-trafficking activities in the early 1990s.

FBI Records Under Court Review

The confirmation was contained in a sworn declaration filed on August 28, 2026, before the US District Court for the District of Columbia as part of an ongoing Freedom of Information Act case.

The FBI said the records were compiled during an investigation involving multiple individuals suspected of drug-trafficking crimes.

However, the disclosure does not establish that Tinubu committed an offence or was convicted of any crime. Further processing of records that are not exempt from disclosure is continuing under court supervision.

The development has renewed political debate in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition figures demanding greater transparency while the Presidency and Tinubu’s supporters point to the absence of a conviction or finding of guilt.

2. Nigeria’s Economy Grows 4.43% in Q2 2026

Nigeria’s economy grew by 4.43 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, up from 4.23 per cent in the same period of 2025 and 3.89 per cent in the first quarter.

Government Targets $1 Trillion Economy

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the stronger performance pushed Nigeria’s half-year growth rate to 4.16 per cent.

Agriculture grew by 4.39 per cent, services by 4.60 per cent and manufacturing by 3.24 per cent.

The Federal Government said the figures show that economic reforms are producing results and keeping Nigeria on track toward its target of becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

Officials also pointed to rising foreign reserves, improved credit ratings, trade surpluses and the naira’s stronger performance as signs of improving economic conditions.

3. Security Forces Rescue 15 NYSC Members and Six Others in Kogi

Security forces have rescued 21 kidnapped victims, including 15 National Youth Service Corps members, from a kidnappers’ camp in the Egume-Ochaja forest area of Ofu Local Government Area, Kogi State.

Four Kidnappers Killed

The operation, conducted by the military, police, DSS and local hunters and vigilantes, resulted in a gun battle in which four suspected kidnappers were killed.

The victims, comprising eight males and 13 females, had been abducted while travelling after completing their orientation activities.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed the rescue and said the victims were receiving medical attention. Two reportedly sustained gunshot injuries.

4. US to Withdraw About 200 Troops from Nigeria

The Defence Headquarters has confirmed plans by the United States to withdraw about 200 military personnel from Nigeria, describing the move as a routine adjustment rather than an end to the countries’ security partnership.
