Donald Duke Proposes Skill-Based Secondary Education, Restricts Study Visas to University Level

PRP presidential candidate Donald Duke has proposed making senior secondary education from SS1 to SS3 focused mainly on skill acquisition and restricting education-related visas for Nigerian children to university level and above.

The former Cross River State governor made the proposal during an interview on the Naija Unfiltered programme produced by Symfoni, in a clip shared widely on X on August 23, 2026.

Duke’s Education Proposal

Duke said his proposed education policy would move senior secondary schools away from a predominantly academic model and place greater emphasis on practical skills.

“For me, SS1-SS3 should be purely skill acquisition. I will ensure that no child is given a visa for education except from University level up,” he said.

The approximately two-minute clip was shared by X user @OneJoblessBoy and attracted thousands of views and reactions.

Focus on Practical Skills

Duke has previously advocated free and compulsory education up to senior secondary school, alongside vocational and technical training.

He has argued that students should leave secondary school with practical skills that can help them earn a living, rather than depending entirely on university education.

His latest proposal also reflects his broader argument that Nigeria needs to build a more productive workforce by equipping young people earlier with employable skills.

Study Abroad Debate

The proposal comes amid continuing debate over the number of Nigerians seeking education abroad, including young people pursuing opportunities before university.

Supporters of Duke’s position argued online that Nigeria’s secondary education system should provide stronger vocational training and reduce excessive pressure on universities. Others questioned how the proposed visa restriction would work and whether it could limit educational opportunities for Nigerian families.

The issue also touches on concerns over brain drain, domestic education standards and the growing demand for overseas study.

Duke’s 2027 Presidential Bid

Duke is contesting the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), having previously contested the presidency in 2019 under the Social Democratic Party.

His 2027 campaign has focused on education, productivity, infrastructure, security and economic development. His candidacy has also faced legal challenges from a rival aspirant over the conduct of the party’s nomination process.

As the 2027 campaign gathers momentum, Duke’s proposal places skills development and practical education at the centre of his argument for reforming Nigeria’s education system.
