1. Super Falcons Thrash Egypt 6-2 to Reach WAFCON Quarter-Finals
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Egypt 6-2 in their final Group C match in Morocco. Asisat Oshoala, Gift Monday, Uchenna Kanu, Christy Ucheibe, Rasheedat Ajibade and Joy Omewa scored for Nigeria as the defending champions recovered strongly from their opening defeat to Malawi.

2. Nigerian Army Declares ISWAP Leaders Wanted, Offers N50m Bounty
The Nigerian Army has declared several senior Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) commanders wanted after analysing intelligence and devices recovered during military operations in the Lake Chad region of Borno State. Those identified include ISWAP leader Abu Musa Al-Mangawi Baa Shuwa and his deputy, Muhammad Jidda, also known as “The One-Handed Man.”
The Army placed a N50 million bounty on one of the key commanders and N10 million on another, with rewards available for credible information leading to their arrest. The military urged residents to provide information through official channels as operations continue across insurgent strongholds.
3. NAICOM Revokes Nigeria Reinsurance Corporation’s Licence
The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has revoked the operating licence of Nigeria Reinsurance Corporation over its failure to meet the statutory minimum capital requirement under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria Muiz Banire has been appointed receiver and provisional liquidator to oversee the winding-up process, including the recovery of assets and settlement of liabilities. The action follows a wider recapitalisation exercise across Nigeria’s insurance sector.
4. FG Promises Payment of N35,000 Wage Award Arrears Before Mid-August
The Federal Government has assured public servants that outstanding N35,000 wage award arrears will be paid before the middle of August, while promotion arrears are also being processed. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele gave the assurance during a meeting with labour representatives in Abuja.
Government officials said reconciliation of the wage award has been completed and funds are at the final stage of release. Labour leaders welcomed the commitment but urged the government to settle all outstanding agreements promptly.
5. Nigerian Stock Market Gains N192 Billion on First HoldCo Demand
The Nigerian Exchange Limited recorded a N192 billion increase in market capitalisation as the All-Share Index gained 0.12 per cent to close at 245,209.34 points. First HoldCo Plc led buying interest among major stocks, rising 2.19 per cent alongside gains recorded by several other equities.
Banking, consumer goods and oil and gas stocks contributed to the market’s positive performance. Despite more declining stocks than gainers, strong demand for large-cap equities pushed the market higher, with year-to-date returns reaching 57.6 per cent.
6. Correctional Service Removes Prison Chief After Inmate’s TikTok Livestream
The Nigerian Correctional Service has removed a prison chief and launched a nationwide security review after a death-row inmate appeared in a viral TikTok livestream. The incident exposed security and monitoring lapses within the correctional facility.
Authorities said the review will examine access control, operational procedures and the unauthorised use of electronic devices by inmates. The service is expected to introduce tighter measures to prevent similar breaches across custodial centres.
7. FG Intensifies Seismic Monitoring After Abuja Tremor
The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency to provide hourly updates on seismic activity following a light earth tremor recorded in parts of Abuja on August 4.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake said the tremor was detected by the Utako monitoring station and posed no significant threat to lives or property. Residents were advised to remain calm as authorities continue monitoring seismic activity in the affected areas.
8. ICPC Submits Interim Report on Fake Agency Scandal to Tinubu
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has submitted an interim report to President Bola Tinubu on its investigation into the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council and other alleged fake government agencies.
The investigation found that Adeniyi Adeyemi Mathew allegedly forged documents to establish the entity, while no federal funds were released to the organisation. The commission recommended prosecution as the investigation also uncovered other fictitious agencies connected to the case.
9. House Committee Backs Tinubu’s Military Salary Increase and Army Expansion
The House of Representatives Committee on Defence has backed President Bola Tinubu’s approval of salary increases of up to 80 per cent for Armed Forces personnel and the expansion of the Nigerian Army.
Lawmakers said the measures would improve troop morale and strengthen the military’s ability to respond to terrorism and other security threats. The committee also called for sustained funding and proper oversight to ensure the reforms achieve their intended objectives.
10. Electricity Workers Protest Sack of 17 Colleagues in Ibadan
Electricity workers in Ibadan have protested the dismissal of 17 colleagues and the alleged continued casualisation of workers by employers in the power sector. The workers occupied the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company office in the Ring Road area, demanding the reinstatement of the affected employees.
Union representatives also called for an end to long-term casual employment without formal contracts and improved working conditions. They warned that further industrial action could follow if the demands are not addressed.
