Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of presenting forged documents in his ongoing criminal defamation trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sowore made the allegation after Wednesday’s court proceedings, where a DSS witness reportedly denied authoring a document tendered as evidence in the case.
Witness Disowns Document
The trial arises from social media posts made by Sowore in August 2025, in which he referred to President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal.” The DSS subsequently charged him with criminal defamation, alleging that the posts were false, malicious and capable of causing public unrest.
During the hearing, a DSS official who testified as a prosecution witness reportedly disowned a letter said to have been sent by the agency to Meta Platforms regarding Sowore’s Facebook account.
According to Sowore, the witness told the court that he neither wrote nor signed the document presented by the prosecution.
Sowore Accuses DSS of Forgery
Addressing journalists after the hearing, Sowore described the incident as “forgery of the highest order.”
He alleged that the witness repeatedly denied responsibility for the document and claimed he acted only on directives from senior officials within the DSS.
Sowore also said his legal team is seeking to compel the Director-General of the DSS to appear before the court to explain the circumstances surrounding the disputed document.
Trial Continues
The activist maintained that the case is an attempt to suppress criticism of the government and insisted the prosecution’s case relies on questionable evidence.
Court proceedings remain ongoing, with additional hearings expected as both sides continue to present their arguments.
The DSS has yet to publicly respond to Sowore’s latest allegations, while the Presidency has not issued any statement on the matter.
