Who is Skone?

José Miguel Manzano Bazalo better known as Skone is a Spanish rapper, MC and composer who became the champion of the  Red Bull Batalla de los Gallos International in 2016 thanks to his great talent in freestyle. Skone was born on December 27, 1989 in Malaga and is currently considered one of the most famous rappers in all of Spain.

Beginnings in Skone’s life

The beginnings of the now famous singer originated thanks to the taste he had for graffiti, which is considered by many to be one of the branches of Rap and hip hop culture, Skone began to make drawings and that was how his artistic name was born, because by not Knowing how to call himself professionally, he began to make sketches and realized that the best letters that came out were S, K and E ; among many tests he came to find SKONE and finally that remained as the artistic name of José Miguel Manzano Bazalo; although before he came to be known by some as ” Chumi “.

Curiously, one of the things that Skone remembers the most that he included to be the person he is today was the movie 8 Miles by the singer Eminem because when he saw it, he felt identified with the character and realized that he also wanted to have that life. In 2006 José Miguel Manzano Bazalo, whom we now know as Skone , began to improvise and create his first lyrical compositions. His success came almost immediately and many people began to know about him as his talent began to spread throughout Malaga. .

In 2007 Skone  was invited to participate in Red Bull but could not go for some personal reasons but later with a background of battles in Andalusia, he signed up again and came out cool at only 18 years of age.

Skone confessed that he felt very nervous to participate in his first competition at Red Bull but at the same time very flattered to have the opportunity to show his talent in front of so many important people, so he decided to enjoy the moment without thinking about whether he would win or not but live that experience no one would take away from him; However, although he had all the spirit, he was defeated in the first round, but that did not discourage him and he continued to participate in later years.

Over the years Skone ‘s style began to evolve because from being someone funny he became much more ” bastard ” although he continues to maintain that style with which he became known and has commented that his way of creating phrases and rhymes always depends of the person you are dealing with.

“My style will vary depending on all this, although I have always been quite faithful to what I am, and I have gone through a lot of fads («double tempos», metrics…). I respect everyone, but I have always done what I like and I will continue to do that,” she commented in a recent interview. Today Skone  is considered one of the greats in the world of Freestyle due to the enormous record that he has behind him.

During the years 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, due to various reasons, the cockfights had to be put aside due to the lack of investment by Red Bull , who, due to lack of income, stopped carrying out the project. During this time , Skone , like many other freestylers, decided to try his luck in many more national and international championships.

Although in his early years he continued to demonstrate his great talent for creating rhymes almost immediately and with surprising improvisation outside of the most important battles, his great success came in 2014 when Skone  won the first Red Bull battle in Malaga, but a a year later in 2015, in Alicante, he fell in the quarterfinals. “I was hoarse and had many personal problems.”

In 2015 Skone chose to get away from the battles a bit and focus on his professional career as a musician and this leads him to stay out of most battles but only a year later in 2016 he would re-emerge as the greats, beating Chuty in the National in a final that was filled with much controversy.

Months later, Skone would record his name in the freestyle history books by beating great world-class stars such as Papo , Arkano, Jota and Tom Crowley to rise as international belt champion, this being his greatest prize and that has placed him as one of the most important rappers in music in all of Spain.

In a recent interview, the singer Skone commented that he himself did not believe that he could win because even minutes before his victory he was sure that it would be Jota who would win the championship; “The previous thought was that he was going to win Jota, it was 100% clear to me. Not for nothing, but because since the public didn’t yell at me or make noise at me, the jury gave me replies all the time… In the end, even if you think so, you come to the point that maybe you’re not doing so well. So when I won I thought…really? I’ve been thinking about that for about three days.”

The following year he wanted to demonstrate and reaffirm his great success, so he returned to the Red Bull Battle of the International Roosters to win a two-time international championship, but on that occasion he would be stopped by another great player who was already sounding strong,  Wos  , who ended up beating Skone in the quarterfinals . of end. However, what marked 2017 in the singer’s career was his appearance in the Urban Roosters with their FMS (Freestyle MastersSeries) a kind of league among the top ten MCs in Spain, Skone finishes in second place behind Chuty.

In 2018 he was proclaimed champion of God Level 1vs1 after starring in one of the most impressive freestyle battles against the Mexican Aczino ; Later, his great talent and knowledge on the subject thanks to his artistic career led him to be a jury in many other world-class competitions and his success began to expand beyond just freestyle battles and he started several projects within Spanish television such as In Réplica, which became a success as Skone invited music personalities to face them in different challenges, he also launched the Rimas y Barras program, a contest to find new improvised rap talents. He later became the God Level 2019 Pairs Winner alongside Chuty.

After several years away from the battles to give a different twist to his artistic career, Skone decided to return to the Red Bull Batalla de los Gallos with great enthusiasm four years after winning his international championship with the intention of “giving a gift” to his followers. who urged him to return to delight them with his great talent and skill in improvisation. But before accepting Skone declared that he expected the best to participate because it would really be fighting against the best; “If I participate in a competition where the best are, I want the best to be there. I’d rather lose a final against Chuty or BTA than win without them.”Skone affirmed in reference to the absence of two main favorites such as  Bnet who had decided not to participate and even affirmed that his return to battles was not for money but for pleasure and self-satisfaction.

In October 2020, the 30-year-old freestyler managed to fulfill his promise and was crowned champion of the Red Bull Batalla de los Gallos in Spain for the second time after defeating Blon. Skone returned to Red Bull four years after being crowned champion for the first time in 2016, the year in which he would also win the International Final in Peru. 

The triumph he achieved in his country led him to be part of the long-awaited International Red Bull 2020 battle that would take place in the Dominican Republic and which would be attended by all the great winners of regional broadcasts in order to meet the most talented, ingenious and with the greatest skill of improvisation that would take the title of the year in the most important rap and freestyle event in the world; being the first time that it would be broadcast without an audience due to the coronavirus pandemic that was plaguing the world at the time.

In the 2020 Red Bull International Final, the best rap exponents who came out winners from each country were presented, among them were  Acertijo (Chile),  Rapder  and  Aczino (Mexico),  Bnet and  Skone (Spain), Elevn , Valles T ( Colombia), Exodo Lirical  and Shield Master (Dominican Republic), Mac (Ecuador), Minos (Bolivia), Naicen  (Uruguay),  SNK (Costa Rica), Stick  (Peru),  Tata MC (Argentina) and  Yartzi(USA). Those in charge of presenting the event were Queen Mary and Serko Fu, two references within the scene, DJ Sonicko and the judges were Jony Beltrán, Arkano, Mozart La Para, Blazzt and Muphasa.
