Who are  EXO?

Exo is a South Korean boy band exponents of the K-pop genre made up of nine members named Xiumin, Suho, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, DO, Kai, and Sehun, although in their debut they became 12 members but after a few years Luhan,  Kris Wu and Tao left the group. The K-Pop group EXO debuted on April 8, 2012 and have achieved great musical successes such as Love Shot, Don’t fight the feeling, Obsession, Monster, Ko Ko Bop, among others.

EXO Beginnings

Before the music group EXO became known to the public, its members underwent training at the SM Entertainment company. This is how we learn that Suho, the leader of the group, was the first member to enter SM Entertainment to train artistically for 6 years. As time passed, the other members of the group joined, so that the last to enter were Chen and Baekhyun, who now serve as the main vocalists of the group.

For the year 2011, Lee Soo-man, producer of SM Entertainment and founder of the company’s record label, made the announcement that a new band would debut in April or May. At that time the musical group was known by the name of M1, and apparently it only consisted of 7 members, judging by a photo of them that was leaked on the Internet. While in May, producer Lee spoke about them at a Korean Wave-themed business seminar at Stanford University.

At that meeting, he explained his strategy of separating the musical group into M1 and M2, so that at the same time they would promote their music in both South Korea and China, combining Korean and Mandarin languages ​​in their songs, although the producer had intended for the boys to make their debut that same month, it wasn’t until 7 months later that Chosun llbo newspaper broke news about the new music group.

In December of that year M1 and M2 decided to change their stage name to EXO , a name that refers to the word “exoplanet” and that defines the planets that are outside the Solar System. However, we must clarify that there were still distinctions between the subgroups. This is how those destined to sing in South Korea became known as EXO-K , while those who went to China to sing called themselves EXO-M, and with these respective stage names they made their debut at the television festival known as SBS Gayo Daejun, dated December 29, 2011.

EXO’s trajectory and history

The following year, in 2012, the young singers, divided into M1 and M2, released the single “What is love”. Subsequently, on March 9, they made the song “History” public, so their formal debut took place at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul on March 31, 2012. Shortly after, EXO  gave a second concert at the great hall of the University of Business and International Economics in Beijing, also in April of the same year April M1 and M2 launched the single that was known as “Mama”, the main song of the EP of the same name.

During that same year, the EXO  boys  appeared on the music program Inkigayo, while their colleagues from the other half of the group made themselves known in China during the Yinyue Fengyun Bang Awards. We have to point out that at this time the young music group made a huge leap to fame, so that the Mandarin Chinese version of the song ranked first on the Chinese music charts. While the video clip also reached the top position on streaming sites, while the Korean version ranked 7th on the YouTube world chart, we can’t ignore that the Korean EP ranked 1st on the Gaon Album Chart and eighth on Billboard’s World Albums Chart.

A short time later, towards the end of April, EXO-M participated as guest artists in Super Junior’s Super Show 4 tour, giving a concert in the Indonesian capital. Subsequently, for the month of November EXO received the recognition of “best new Asian group” at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. At the same time, EXO  were nominated for three awards at the 27th Golden Disk Awards, where they were recognized with the category of “Rookie of the Year” for the Korean subgroup, and “Popular Group” for the Chinese subgroup in the Top Chinese. The following year, in 2013, they released their first studio album called XOXO, the Korean version of this album was called Kiss, and the Chinese version was Hug. We are aware that both subgroups only collaborated on the song “Wolf”, while the other songs were recorded separately. We have to point out that the two versions of this album reached the top of Billboard’s World Albums Chart just a week after its release, without a doubt a great success for  EXO.

For the month of December of that same year, the group  EXO released the Christmas EP known as Miracles in December, whose title song “Miracles in December” was performed on stage on the date of December 5 on M! Countdown.

Later, in 2014, EXO  released to the public what would be their third known mini album under the title Overdose, which was a success and became the best-selling EP in the history of the musical group, to the degree that it was recognized in the “Album of the Year” category at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. However, this year they would also face some problems, since the leader of the subgroup EXO-M, known by the name of  Kris Wu , filed a lawsuit against his company, ending his contract and putting the violation of his human rights as the main reason. .

At that time, the group’s first tour also took place, which they named EXO Planet 1 – The Lost Planet, beginning with the date of May 23, 2014 at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena and for October 10, SM Entertainment once again faced a lawsuit from one of the group’s members, this time it was Luhan, from the Chinese subgroup, who accused them of treating him contemptuously compared to the Korean members, in addition to causing him health problems due to labor exploitation.

The result of these two lawsuits was that SM Entertainment made the announcement that EXO would continue their artistic activities with two fewer members. In this way, on August 4 they made the announcement that from then on the two subgroups would unite and call themselves EXO-L; and that same day they opened their website and made a mobile application available to their followers. While for December 22 of that year, EXO released the album Exology Chapter 1: The Lost Planet.

The following year, in 2015, they went on their second tour titled EXO Plnaet 2 – The EXO’luXion. It was the same way this year when they released their second studio album known as Exodus, later came the release of the song “Call me baby”, and we cannot forget the publication of the drama called EXO Next Door, where they participated alongside actress Moon Ga-young. It was also in this year that they released the singles of: “Love me right romantic universe” (in Japanese), “Drop that”, “Sing for you” and “Unfair”.

Later, between 2016 and 2017, EXO  released studio albums titled Ex’ Act and The War, which raised their fame internationally. Also in these years they did the EXO Planet 3 – The EXO’ rDIUM tour and between 2017 and 2018 they were on the EXO Planet #4 – The EℓyXiOn tour. While in 2018 they released the album Don’t mess up my tempo, and in 2019 they released the album Obsession and it was also in 2019 when they did the EXO Planet 5 – Exploration tour.

In June 2021, the EP “DON’T FIGHT THE FEELING” would arrive, being EXO ‘s seventh mini-album (considered as a special album) of the South Korean boy group, EXO from SM Entertainment, which opened a gap between their previous release, 2019’s Obsession and the first project to feature the members’ voices. Lay, DO, and Xiumin since Don’t Mess Up My Tempo in November 2018. However, the leader of the group, Suho, and Chen were unable to participate in the recording of the album due to their mandatory military service since May. and October 2020, the time the album was being recorded at the same time.
