Beginnings in the life of Bejo with Locoplaya

Since his childhood Bejo always had a very special connection to music thanks to his brother who on many occasions was the one who taught the songs that were hitting the hiphop and rap genre, then Bejo searched the internet for some music tracks which he downloaded. for him to put lyrics to them because he really liked composing, since then he had the unique style that has always characterized him in his lyrics.

In 2006 , Bejo decided to get together with his friends Don Patricio and Uge to create the group Locoplaya, which entered the rap scene in the Canary Islands with force because he wanted to join forces to create a musical project that would bring out the genre that for those years had not it was at its peak as pop dominated the world music scene.

In 2009 a very close friend of Bejo and the rest of the members of Locoplaya died of cancer, so Don Patricio and Bejo decided to honor his name and compose a song in commemoration of that great loved one, the song was called “Our You are the beach” . The director of a performance decided to take the story of the deceased boy to the movies and use that song as a soundtrack, it was so good that in 2012, it was nominated at the Goya Awards in the category of Best Original Song.

Bejo’s career and history

It was in 2013 when Bejo finally decided to launch his first musical production completely alone and without the help of his Locoplaya companions . At that time Borja called himself ” Bejotaeme ” and with that name he released his album titled “Creo” which included 14 songs which still felt very homey. Only a few months later he released his first EP titled “FundaMental” which included only 4 singles but for this album he decided to change his stage name and reduce it to simply “ Bejo ”.

Why is it called Bejo? It is the same singer who in a recent interview said the reason why he decided to call himself Bejo and use it as his stage name: “It comes from my initials, I am Borja Jiménez Mérida, the initials are BJM and before that was my name in rap” Bejotaeme” but I cut my losses and it stayed in Bejo, without the m”.

In the summer of 2014, he returned with the group Locoplaya to release a self-titled album that included the hit singles “Locoplaya”, “Dímelo rapeando” and “Andando por la calle”, two years later Bejo released a collaborative EP with Don Patricio called “ Estepa” and a few weeks later he released another album as a soloist that he titled “Pirdula”.

“Hipi Hapa Vacilanduki” was without a doubt the album that gave Bejo the boost he needed so much to really start to stand out in the musical field because if his name was already known in Spain, he really wanted to take the step to internationalization and that his music will reach more places in the world. Listed as one of the best albums of all 2017, “Hipi Hapa Vacilanduki” gave Bejo great musical successes such as “Mucho, Silaba Tónica, El amo de casa, Amigos desconocidos”, among others.

In the fall of 2018, he released his second album, “ Parafernalio ”, as usual in his way of doing things, of which he has been a pioneer, premiering most of his songs prior to the release, “Perogrullo”, “Una Papa Pal Kilo”, “Onomeatropella”, “Helarte”, “Tupperware” and “Hasta Abajo” and “Mentecato” with their corresponding video clips, the work of cachi.richi. The producers of this album have been: Sume Beats, Cookin’ Soul, Beaty Brain, Nico Miseria, Lativo Produce, Electic, Horror.Vacui, Dj Pimp and Ba$$ilones.

With the release of the single “Corazón tripartito” by Bejo and Nico Miseria, the wait for the EP “ Piedra Pómez ” begins, which both were plotting together after the great success that had been “ Parafernalio ”. After the release of the songs “Toma & Daca” and “Grand Cherokee” on March 24, 2019, this EP consisting of only 4 songs and produced entirely by Nico Miseria, with the exception of the second song, “Toma & Daca”, which was co-produced by Sandro Jeeawock.

By 2019 , Bejo was already an artist who had experimented not only in music, but had also shown his facet as a painter and designer by launching his own merchandise such as clothing and accessories. In an interview he commented how happy he was to venture into all projects, but above all the one that had caught his attention the most, a USB with a peculiar shape.“I like to do things beyond music… The clothing thing is something I’ve always liked. Just as you do a design for a cover, you can do a serigraphy for textiles. The USB penis-drive thing arose because I had done many disks, but never a physical one. And since I had many gigabytes of creativity, I thought that a pen-drive was the appropriate format to put my songs, videos, paintings… a potpourri of things for the public. It occurred to me that doing it with the form from the logo, and thus the Pene-drive was born. Inside there are also beatmaker remixers, fan illustrations.”

Bejo not only showed that he was very strong in the world of music, but he was also achieving great acceptance as a painter, because on ebay he put up for sale one of his drawings that he himself preferred to call ” Drawings ” with an initial value of 1.10 euros but his surprise was great when his painting finally managed to sell for more than 125 thousand euros. “Many people told me: ‘How much are you selling it to me for?’ The price is so relative… I thought that the best thing was that whoever wants to give me more, take it with them” , he commented. By the end of 2019 he managed to make his first exhibition in Tenerife.

At the beginning of April 2020 when the Coronavirus pandemic hit the whole world and especially Spain as one of the most affected countries, Bejo expressed solidarity with his people and raised funds to make protective masks by releasing a song with which all income he earned would be offered to help others. # Fiestaenlaterraza was the name of the single that Bejo released with the intention of supporting the fight against the terrible virus that claimed the lives of many people around the world and very much in his own style , Bejo invited all his fans and followers not to leave home because even locked up they could have a good time and have a party on the terrace.

“Everything is managed with things that I have at home, I have a terrible Diogenes. It arose from the situation of being locked up and I wanted to give the matter a bit of humor, which I know is a serious issue that is affecting many people, but the idea It’s to raise funds and be able to take material to hospitals,” Bejo commented on how he came up with the idea of ​​recording a song about COVID-19 and preferred to ignore all those who attacked him because in one part of the song he says “The Chinese virus” which was heard as a type of racism.

He had previously released another single called ‘ Duele ‘, which “is a little song that he had recorded that he hadn’t released and it’s a little sentimental and loving,” he commented at the time.

On April 22, 2020, Bejo  had the great opportunity to sing a freestyle with the world famous producer Bizarrap, BZRP,  who by then had become very famous on YouTube for the collaborations he had made with other exponents of Latin rap and trap. Bizarrap released the song Bejo: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 27  and that’s how Bejo joined a long list of great singers who had been lucky enough to sing with BZRP  such as Lucho SSJ ,  Aczino ,  Polimá WestCoast , Bhavi , Pequeño77 , Frijo , Nicki Nicole ,Alemán , Trueno , John C , Dani , Louta , among others. 

Continuing with the sounds of rap to which we are accustomed, Bizarrap  and Bejo merged their talents in a song that also had several comic elements very much in the style of Bejo , not only because of the tiny hand that the man from Tenerife shows while mopping and smoking, but also at one point in the song he begins to cough, but then he took out an endless strip of paper from his mouth and then continued with his theme.
