Zoe Caldwell

The Australian Zoe Caldwell, considered one of the great actresses of the New York theater, has died at her residence in the Big Apple, at the age of 86. She was retired after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Born on September 14, 1933 in Melbourne, she first appeared in a stage production at age 9, as one of the Lost Boys, from “Peter Pan.” After several years as a member of the Union Theater Repertory Company, from her hometown, she moved to London to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, where she met with Charles Laughton and Vanessa Redgrave .

Later he would make his Broadway debut with “The Devils” in 1995. He would soon achieve enormous prestige among New York viewers. She won four Tony Awards, the most prestigious in American theater, for “Slapstick Tragedy”, “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”, “Medea” and “Master Class”.

Although he never considered film and television as a priority for his career, from time to time he accepted a role. She was the countess, one of the protagonists of the film from which Jeff Daniels escapes , in The Purple Rose of Cairo , under the orders of Woody Allen . Her last job was So Far, So Close, from 2009, where she was the grandmother of the boy who had been orphaned as a result of September 11. 

Married to theater producer and director Robert Whitehead  from 1968 until his death in 2002, Zoe Caldwell had two sons, Sam and Charlie Whitehead.
